Day 5 learning (Friday 27/03/20)

And so to the final day’s learning before the Easter break. You should have recorded four 20-minute reading sessions this week into your Reading & Contact book. If you followed the advice we talked about last week, you would also now have finished your holiday home learning (an extra hour each day this week.)

So onto today’s learning… but first a joke. Why didn’t Pythagoras like chips? Because they were made in Ancient Grease.

Erm. Ok then. Visit the Discovery Education Espresso website and log-in with the username and password you were given (you put it on the back of your Reading and Contact book on a sticker.)

Click on these options: Key Stage Two – History – Greeks – events

Watch the video clip – What was the importance of the Olympic Games?

Next, explore the link to the right of the video clip: Special Report – Olympics

Activity

Use the biggest sheet of paper in your learning pack to present your final draft of a poster about The Olympic Games. You should research it first and collect your information into your lined booklet. Compare the two versions of the Olympics: ancient and modern. Tell your reader about when they started, why they started, the different events, the clothing worn, the location, how often they were held and so on.

There isn’t an extension activity today – just spend longer researching your poster and drawing better pictures of the different events. This should take a lot of time today so it’s just as well you have finished your holiday home learning and this week’s reading! As usual, do your best.

Enjoy the Easter holidays as much as you can but remember, the most important thing is to follow the rules and keep yourself and others safe. I’ll be back after Easter with more learning and even more jokes! (Groan!) Bye for now… Mr Hankin

Day 4 learning (Thursday 26/03/20)

Morning all. Hopefully you’re enjoying the activities so far? Apologies for not posting an activity yesterday – technical difficulties while working from home! I’m back in school now so no more problems!

All of this is a bit weird, isn’t it, but let’s make the best of it, eh?

Which reminds me of a joke: You know when scuba divers enter the water from a boat? Do you know why they fall backwards into the water? Because if they fell forwards, they would land in the boat.

Okay. Onto today’s learning…

Watch the video clip – Who did the Ancient Greeks worship and why?

Activity

Who were the 12 Greek gods, known as the Olympians? What were their roles? What were their special powers? Find out what you can about each god and record your research in note form (not full sentences) into the lined booklet you were given. Use other research sources, not just the video clip (in other words, use the internet to research.) This is a good source: http://www.primaryhomeworkhelp.co.uk/Greece.html

Extension Activity

Can you find any stories involving the gods? Find out about ancient Greek myths – stories involving the gods and humans and usually involving a quest (like Jason and the Argonauts!) Focus on one myth and present it as a comic strip (remember, like the King Midas cartoon in an old reading paper we did?)

Day 2 learning (Tuesday 24/03/20)

Hi guys. I’m in our classroom and it’s really empty without you. Our school is a great building, but it’s nothing without you lot. For starters, there’s nobody laughing at my jokes. Spare a thought for what is happening in the North Pole all the moment: Santa’s elves have been told to elf ice-olate.

So onto today’s learning then…

Visit the Discovery Education Espresso website.

Log-in with the username and password you were given (you put it on the back of your Reading and Contact book on a sticker.)

Key Stage Two – History – Greeks – People

Watch the video about a famous Greek mathematician, Pythagoras.

Activity

Collect all of the information you can from the video about the main man (Pythagoras) and present it in an exciting fact-file type poster that would appeal to other 11-year-olds. It should include pictures, diagrams, fun facts and so on. Use a plain A4-sized piece of paper (it was sent home in your learning pack.) Have fun!

Extension activity

Add to your fact file by widening your search to other websites. Enjoy!

Choose ‘When and where was Ancient Greece?’

Watch the video

Activity: (on lined paper in your learning pack.)

Use the internet to plan a history discovery holiday for you and a friend to Greece. Where will you go? Where will you fly from? Where will you visit when you are there? Which historically important sites? How much will everything cost? Which hotel will you stay in? Design a daily itinerary (timetable) of what you will do and how long you will spend in each place.

Extension Activity: (on smaller piece of plain paper in your learning pack.)

Use the internet to help you choose your favourite historical site in Greece. Find an object of historical importance there. Draw it!

Healthy snacks

‘ We’re enjoying healthy snacks at break time.’

Experiencing evolution in The Science Dome

We all enjoyed our experience in The Science Dome last week. We learnt all about evolution to prepare for this half-term’s Science learning. From the atoms that make up who we are and the DNA that tells our bodies what to grow like, to the Big Bang and dinosaurs, we found out lots more about where we come from. A big thank you to Simon for the fantastic presentation!

Tesco’s Choir

On Thursday 5th December the choir sang at Tesco’s in Newton Abbot. It was a fantastic, but nervous experience singing to such a large amount of people. They all did extremely well spreading festive cheer whilst people were shopping. Members of the public commented on how amazing the choir sounded. A massive thank you also goes to parents, carers and friends who came to Tesco to support the choir in this event. May it be first of many!

Year 6 Plastic litter pick to Dawlish Warren

Following a visit to school by children’s environmental author Ellie Jackson, our Year 6 children decided to set an example to others and wanted to pick up plastic rubbish from a local beach. We wrote to GWR who helped us get there for free. When we got there, we borrowed litter picking sticks from the Nature Reserve then ventured onto the beach. We found all sorts of plastic litter that had either been left by people enjoying a day out or other rubbish that had been washed up on the beach by the tide. Fishing nets, floats, plastic bottle and clothing were all found and collected by us. We brought it all back to school to use in a sculpture next week…

Plastic waste litter pick

Following our visit from environmental author Ellie Jackson and members of Newton Abbot Town Council, we have been inspired to do something about the global problem of plastic pollution.

We have been supported by Great Western Railways (GWR) who have issued a free train pass for the day so we can carry out a plastic litter pick at Dawlish Warren beach on Thursday 18th July. We will be using litter pickers supplied by Teignbridge Council to help collect as much plastic waste as possible.

Afterwards, we will have a picnic then create some Art with the rubbish we collected. When we get back to school we will find out how we can dispose of the plastic in a less harmful way for our environment.

Parents and Carers please look out for the reply slip next week…
