Year 6 Play Leader
When our children are in year 6, they have the opportunity to become Young Play Leaders. Our Young Play Leaders are a group of caring children who have been trained to lead activities for other children on the playground. They encourage children to join in games and to extend their friendships. The leadership skills they are taught helps to raise self-esteem, self-confidence and encourage physical activity.
Each year they attend three Young Play Leaders Conferences, through the School Sports Partnership, to support the development of the provision. These conferences are attended by many Play Leaders from different schools in our local area. During these conferences the children work collaboratively with different children, share ideas and are trained by PE specialists.
Every term, in school, our Young Play Leaders also work alongside our School Sports Partnership Coordinator to support them in delivering the training to the children on the playground. This provides them the opportunity to transfer the skills they have learnt from the conferences and adapt the games to suit the needs of the other children, with professional support.
Our Young Play Leaders Club, is a weekly club, run by Miss Hall (our PE Subject Partner). The Young Play Leaders are taught skills such as communication, fair play, organising groups/teams and the STEP principle (space, task, equipment, people). This club helps the children plan, practise and discuss fun and engaging ways to get the children active during lunchtime.
