Hello everyone!
We hope that you all enjoyed Tuesday! It was bright but a little chilly, however, the sunshine always lifts our spirits and we hope you feel this way too!
I promised some more science experiments today. I would like to draw your attention to the lava lamp experiment that Mrs Breakwell found and tested with her daughter; and they were amazed to see it worked! I have a lava lamp in my lounge and I often marvel at the shapes that appear when it is working! Give the experiment a try.
I was thinking about bubbles I suggested you explored yesterday and suddenly I remembered that you can make a different type of bubbly slime using soap flakes! If you can get some soap flakes it is very easy to make. It can be kept and it gives a slimy ,swampy texture great to explore or use to create a new world for your small toys like dinosaurs, super heroes and so on. Here is the recipe followed by a video of how to make it:
How to Make Soap Flake Slime
- Mix 1 cup soap flakes with 4 cups hot water
- Add a few drops of food colouring (optional)
- Let the mixture stand for up to an hour
- Beat the mixture vigorously with a spoon.
How did you get on with making a kite? Please send us some photos! Maybe today you would like to make a paper aeroplane and then measure how far it flies each time. You must always stand on the same start position. You can measure it by counting your footsteps, laying down a row of cuddly toys to match the distance or your could use string to measure the distance each time! Here are some simple instructions:
- fold paper in half, open out
- fold the top corners in to the middle fold
- fold these corners in again
- fold in half
- fold back each wing
- ready to fly!

Folding paper planes and adding a paper clip on the front…
Today’s story links to wind again! It is called “Rosie’s Hat” by Julia Donaldson. After listening to this story I wondered if you can create a journey for one of your toys or even your hat! Where will it go? Will it hide? Will it be safe? How will it find it’s way home? Have fun creating your own story! we would love to hear them.
Thank you and we hope you have a good Wednesday

Hello everyone!
What a very windy day Monday turned out to be! At one point I noticed that my washing nearly blew over the fence! Thank heavens for strong pegs!
I know that very often on a windy day at school lots of you are keen to make kites. You can have so much fun making a kite; all you need is:
Paper (any paper a page from an old news paper or magazine would do), scissors tape and string or ribbon
Draw a picture or pattern on your paper or cut out the shape you would like your kite to be and then colour it in or, if you have any you, could stick on some stickers or pictures you have cut out!
Attach the string with tape making sure it is secure. You choose whether you would like long or short string!
Take it outside run very fast and see if your kite flies behind you!
This short video shows another way to make a kite with some simple folds
Kites can also be easy made from a paper plate or a paper bag!
- Using a paper bag
- paper plate kites
Why not have a try at making your own kite! Let me know how you get on!
The wind is not a great mover of washing on the line but also of bubbles!
Why not have some bubble fun in your outside space. You can make bubble mixture easily with water and washing up liquid and you can make bubble wands with pipe cleaners or cake/cookie cutters! Are bubbles always the same shape! Are they still a sphere even if you use a star or square? Can you keep whisking the bubble and water mixture to make bubble foam? Does bubble foam float on the wind?
- blow gently to make a bubble
- you can whisk to make bubble foam
I have chosen a story by Nick Sharratt “Shark in the park on a Windy day!”
Take care all, we may have some more science fun for you tomorrow

Tuesday 12th Lava Lamps and Sticky Textures!
Good Morning Happy Tuesday It was another sunny day on Monday but the wind was also VERY strong. I was in school on Monday helping the Key Worker children and we go blown around the playground! We made paper planes and wind sticks.. The wind blew the planes a really LONG distance down the grass bank!. If it is windy again this week maybe you could make a paper plane or a windmill/ pinwheel
- Folding paper planes and adding a paper clip on the front…
- Folding your own pinwheel.
- What Colour could you add to your pinwheel?
I know that lots of you love exploring sticky textures …
Cornflour mixture and water is always popular .…
I’m not sure what ingredients are in this gloopy mixture but it looks like GREAT FUN! I said that I would want to put my hands in to play…
Tomorrow Mrs Breakwell is going to lead a session on making a Larva Lamp at school, so I thought you might like to explore making one at home.
Making a larva Lamp is a new exploration for us all.. Mrs Breakwell made a larva lamp with her daughter today and sent me a video of the lamp completed, it was AMAZING. The recipe works really well. `
ENJOY the experimenting today!!
Today I have added a story that lots of you might know very well …Julia Donaldson books are SO GOOD.. Enjoy.
Keep Smiling and Enjoying Time together as a family and KEEP SAFE Miss Butler, Miss Lofthouse and Mrs Breakwell.

Good Morning
We hope you enjoyed the long weekend! The weather was so lovely warm and sunny we hope you all managed some time outside on a walk or perhaps riding your bike or scooters? Like me, I think some of you had a BBQ our first this year and we sat outside in the garden to eat!
I have enjoyed receiving some messages from you and looking at your photos. It seems that as ever you have been so busy!
- Finding treasure with a metal detector!
- Wow! Brooke found this slow worm in her garden.
- Alfie spotted sheep on his walk!
Alfie sent me a photo of his pressed flowers the next stage is to arrange these to create a picture. I will try to do this with my pressed flowers today. Did you do this ?Are your flowers ready to create a picture?
- Flowers pressed and dried
I hope you enjoyed the story” We’re going on a bear hunt” on Friday? Did you create a bear hunt for your family to follow? Brooked has been hiding her dolls in the garden and her mum has been finding them? Can you hide some toys that your family has to find? Remember you need to remember how many toys must be found and also where you hid them!! It might help you to use an egg box or a grid to count them back.
Listening challenge! Can you recognise the following sounds that you might hear in the woods?
On my walk yesterday I spotted a duck with some ducklings. I counted 9 ducklings! The mummy was quacking at them to keep them swimming with her.

This of course reminded me of the song 5 little ducks went swimming one day. Please join in with the video!
We hope you have a good Monday.
Mrs Penn, Mrs Heap and Mrs Coleman
Update: we did send some of your pictures to Captain Tom for his 100th Birthday! He got so many!

Monday 11th May Paper Spiral Snails and A Magic Paintbrush!
Good Morning Everyone, I hope you are all SMILING on this lovely Monday Morning. I’m sure that you all had a very busy weekend. Saturday was such a hot day, I spent it working outside, painting pictures in the garden. I wonder what you all played and enjoyed in the sunshine? I know lots of you are exploring your biking skills and some of you have now learnt to ride without stabilizers on your bike (WELL DONE) and others can now balance on balance bikes and travel further.(YEAH!)
- Keeping safe wearing a helmet
- Strong legs to ride up hills
- Balancing a bike AND finding snails!
On Friday 1st May I asked you a question and then forgot to post the answer!! I asked you all if you could remember how to roll paper to make a spiral……..
How to make a PAPER SNAIL …making your own SPIRAL.
- We had explored paper folding at school
- A Spiral , Zig Zag fold, Bridge with feet etc
- To make a Snail – Colour a strip of paper
- Then roll your strip of paper around a pencil.
- You can draw the eyes and either cut these out or ask your mum and dad to cut out the eye.
- You can make ANY pattern on your snail.

I wonder what colour and pattern you will choose to have on your paper spiral snail?
Look at these beautifully coloured snails ..and a sock insect!
I just love the way that you are drawing and designing images. This activity covers so many skills particularly exercising your fingers and thinking as you create your own stories. Fantastic Thinking
- I just LOVE these pictures
- Just look at this SMILE
- A whole family together – BEAUTIFUL
Today’s story is AMAZING and told with such drama .. ENJOY it and join in if you wish!………
It should make you Smile or Laugh!
I wonder what you would Paint if you had a magic paint brush?
Enjoy your Monday and I look forward to seeing pictures of your paper spiral snails and all of the other learning that you want to explore inside or outside.
Keep SMILING and Enjoying time together as a family. Keep Safe Miss Butler, Miss Lofthouse and Mrs Breakwell.

Hello everyone!
What a beautiful sunny day Wednesday turned out to be! We hope you were able to play in your outside space and go for a walk or perhaps a bike ride or scooter ride! Remember to upload any photos of you doing your fun activities and I will write back to you and perhaps put your photo on the web page for you all to see. ( if you are finding it hard to upload onto the Haytor View website please use admin@haytorview.devon.sch.uk and message for Mrs Penn.)
Of course this is a long weekend as Friday is a Bank Holiday to celebrate May Day and 75 years since VE Day! Alfie has made some bunting to go in his window thanking all the people who have done things for our country in the past and those that are still doing so today: all carers and Key workers and the NHS. You could make some bunting like Alfie and spot flags that might be flying in your neighbourhood.
- Alfie’s bunting!
Are you still enjoying doing some physical activities in and outside. Why not try this these:
Physical Challenge 1
When on your daily walk choose an item that you must not walk on: it might be cracks in the road, sticks, puddles! Remember to jump over these or carefully tip toe between them!
Physical Challenge 2
Set up a line of tins that you can run in and out of (about 10) at one end have some cuddly toys at the other a box. Weave in and out of the tine to collect a cuddly toy and then weave back to place it in the box. Repeat. Can other members of your family do this? Time yourself Who can get the most in 1 minute?
Physical Challenge 3
For building upper arm strength.
You have your hands on the floor and someone holds your feet can you move like this round your room?

I hope you were able to help make the lunch this week? When I was talking to Ella yesterday she said she was making an ice lolly with no stick a bit like a Calippo! So Today’s challenge is to make some ice lollies, you will have to wait for these to set. Thank you for this idea Ella!
(grown ups please support your child but let them try all the skills like pouring and making choices of flavours etc.)
- wash your hands
- collect some small containers: ice cube tray, small plastic cups
- make your favourite drink in a small jug and then pour into the container: you may make squash or even a yogurt smoothie (you could add some fruit to if you want) or use fruit juice your choice!
- place in the freezer and allow to freeze. (probably over night)
- Enjoy.
Today’s story is an old favourite but has lots of actions and sounds in so sit back listen and enjoy Micheal Rosen retelling of the “We’re Going on a bear Hunt!”
Can you create a hunt for one of your toys either in the house or in your garden. Where will your toys cave be? Which way do you and your family need to go to find it? Do you need to draw a map or write some directions? What will you go over, under or through?
Please continue to stay happy and remain safe this weekend and we will post some new activities on Monday for you!
Mrs Coleman, Mrs Heap and Mrs Penn
Thursday and Friday 7th and 8th May Patterns and Repeating Things
Good Morning lovely children and families… The telephone calls and email messages this week have been overwhelmingly beautiful in every way. I miss your laughter and chatter everyday and hearing the bounce in your voices brings a smile onto my face. I pass on my thanks and gratitude for the way in which you have all engaged with the on line sharing of learning. ( If you are finding uploading onto the Haytor View site difficult please use the admin@haytorview.devon.sch.uk instead and just add into the message bar: message for Miss Butler )
Look at these photos of deep concentration, they show wonderful learning in their facial expressions and body positions….SUCH STRONG BRAIN CONNECTIONS BEING BUILT!! I love watching deep engagement in learning. You will notice it so often when your child’s tongues pop out and their gaze is fixed when completing a task.

Do you remember one of challenges I set in the first days of lockdown? I asked if you could try to put elastic bands on top of a pot … I wonder if you are faster at this challenge now?…. Can you remember how to place the bands over the top of a pot? It will strengthen your fingers.

Stretching an elastic band between fingers ready for the challenge.
It was so sunny yesterday afternoon and evening, which was lovely again.. So if you manage to go out on a walk, I wonder if you find a collection of item, daisies, sticks, leaves etc. I wonder if you can create or copy a repeated pattern? ( copying is the easier skill)
- Can you create or copy a simple 2 piece pattern
- Can you create or copy a 3 piece pattern
- What patterns can you create with flowers and leaves?
You might even want to use your toys or fruit pieces to make a repeated pattern. You could even draw or stick a repeated patterns onto a flag for your garden.

Look at this ACTIVE phonic picture which I was sent yesterday. What a wonderful approach to active reading…. You need to be able to juggle managing your physical body alongside the skill of reading words. The family also adapted the game so that her younger sister could take part by naming colours as she came down the slide. I will create some new physical reading challenges for next week… I wonder if you can think of some different physical challenges which you really enjoy and then do let me know. We can all share your great ideas.
If you have created or told any Story Squares, please do keep sending them to me. I am putting them together so that I can record them. Some families are creating mini books. You can make your own mini book very easily from paper and 1 cut. We use this process at school it is easy and so quick.
Today’s story is a PERSONAL favourite of mine and it is read by the author! You are ALL authors of your own stories. This is why story squares are so special. Enjoy this familiar story. I wonder when you hear it you can remember it being read at school and the loud voice I use!! It often makes you all jump.
I will not be posting home learning this Friday because it is a special bank holiday but I will be back with more challenges on Monday. Enjoy the long weekend. Keep Safe and Keep Smiling. Miss Butler, Mrs Breakwell and Miss Lofthouse.
Wednesday 6th May Bug hunting in a book! and in your house!!!
Good Morning Everyone
It was a wet day yesterday. I wonder if you managed to get outside at the end of the day when the rain stopped and the wind calmed down?
I wonder how you keep physically active when you are inside when its so wet? Do you dance to your favourite music? Do you try different ways of moving around your house? Do you remember a few weeks ago I set a challenge using a piece of masking tape and asked you to find different ways of moving over or across the line.
I wonder if today you could try walking on your hands?.. Have you ever been turned into a wheel barrow by your mum or dad? How far could you walk on your hands?
I decided that I need to let my plants grow a little more before I share a photo!! I keep seeing your brilliant growing, my plants are tiny in comparison! THIS IS NOT MINE…. A family sent me this FAB picture of there plants ….They are very healthy and strong.
Look at this snail that I was sent.
Another great spiral but this uses cutting as the main skill. Cutting a spiral out is a hard skill you might wish to try. Strong finger work is needed for this task.
- What tiny things did you find for your egg box?
- Look at these pom pom pets a family created
- The pom pom pets were small enough to fit them into their own mini space.
I wonder if you can make a mini insect? maybe out of pompoms if you have any at home?
I wonder if it is wet again tomorrow, Could play hide and seek with one of the smallest items you found? That’s a hard hide and seek. You will have to get little clues to help your family find them.
Today’s story involves hide and seek with mini items.. You need to look with great care to find one tiny caterpillar on each page. Try these pages before you read the story…CAN YOU SPOT THEM??
- Use your super looking skills?
- Can you find a caterpillar
- on all three of these pages in today’s story?
DID YOU FIND THE CATERPILLARS ON THE THREE PAGES? Now listen to the story and you have 10! caterpillars to spot. Can you find them all. remember to pause the pages so you can look with care. ENJOY
Have a lovely day and keep smiling and enjoying your time together as a family.
From Miss Butler, Mrs Breakwell, Miss Lofthouse.
Wednesday 6th May 2020
Good day everyone!
What a wet start to Tuesday! But a great day to find those small garden creatures especially snails I counted: 11 on the compost heap! They were all different sizes! Did you spot some? If you have some play dough can you make yourself a family of snails? How many family snail members can you make? Mummy, daddy, brother, sister, baby, Nanny, Granddad,Aunty, cousin?

I hope that you enjoyed the story of the “Little Red Hen” yesterday. Do you think the hen should’ve shared the bread or not?
Today work with your family to create a story. Collect up to 10 toys (maybe start with 5) and place on a tray. You are now going to take turns to make up a story by adding an item from the tray. How will the story begin? “once upon a time…” maybe or “One rainy day…” or “Long, long ago..” Take an item from the tray and it must be part of your story carry on creating a story together using all the items and the last person needs to end the story. Maybe saying “The End!” or “they were happy ever after.” Can you remember and retell the story. Maybe a grown up could write down the words each person used in the story! Have fun and enjoy creating a story together. Use the same toys to make up a new story.

Did you have a go at making a sandwich for lunch yesterday? Perhaps today you could try make a simple bread pizza choosing your own toppings:
(adults to support this activity but let your child try as many skills as possible!)
- wash hands
- help slice some French bread or rolls into slices
- spread some tomato puree or some tin tomatoes
- grate some cheese
- add other vegetables: perhaps you may choose: mushroom sliced. sweet corn, a pepper sliced. You may want to add some meat: cut up ham or salami
- add dry herbs and salt and pepper (optional)
- place on an oven tray and bake in a hot oven for 5-10 mins (grown up job)
- ENJOY
Pizza is the theme for today’s story. It is called “Pete the Cat and the Perfect Pizza Party” I love Pete the Cat books hope you like it? This story made me smile!
Did you notice all the “p” words? Pete’s perfect pizza party this is called alliteration can you think of other words that start with the same sounds to create your own sentence? I have this suggestion: Snails, slithering silently slowly and softly!
we wish you all a happy Wednesday doing the things you enjoy

Tuesday 5th May 2020
Hello All
I hope that you have had a good start to this week?
Yesterday I was busy working from home answering emails and doing some thinking!! It has been fun seeing your photos and answering your queries in the emails.
As yesterday I have seen that like me you are enjoying your daily walks! I have uploaded a picture of Guy and his big sister Mia splashing in a stream with their wellie boots on of course! Have you tried this? It is such fun and do you know that even with boots on you can feel the change in temperature of the water!
Yesterday was the last of Mrs Heap’s rhyme times. It has been so good to hear about how you have enjoyed these and tried making the instruments.
- Enjoying Rhyme time together
- Making a rain maker
Cyrus and his family have been using YouTube: “just Dance” to do a daily dance together~ this might appeal to you!
Mrs Heap has been busy over the weekend and she and her husband have made a new video about Ching Ching. In this video Ching Ching is disturbed by lots of sounds. The listening skill activities you may have tried last week should help you to hear the sounds in this video. (If you missed the activities go back to last weeks posts and give them a try Tuesday 28th April and Wednesday 29th April) Remember listening is a vital learning skill and one we need to practice to perfect.
I also received an email from Ella who has been learning how to make bread! It seems cooking and baking are activities you all really like to do at home and the skills and learning that your child gets from these activities are many! In the photos of Ella below we can see how she is really listening to follow verbal instructions, how she is using careful measuring skills to place the correct amounts in the bowl and how she has discovered that things can change(the yeast fizzes, the dough grows in size) and the immense pride in the finished product!
- measuring
- watching for change
- ready to bake
- mmmm lovely bread
Today’s Challenge: To make your own sandwich for lunch!
(grown ups support but let your child do all the skills themselves)
- Wash your hands
- take 2 slices of bread
- use a knife to spread the butter
- add your filling choice of filling: Maybe: jam or marmite~ spread onto the bread, cheese use a grater to grate some cheese and sprinkle on your bread, ham (you choose)
- place the bread on top
- cut in half with a knife,
- cut each half into half again
- Enjoy What shape are your sandwiches? Can you think how you could make a different shaped sandwich?
This activity is fun but full of so much learning! Listening, keeping healthy, using tools like knives and graters for a purpose, quantity only a small amount of spread or jam, shapes, fractions !!
Ella’s bread making has reminded me of the story of “The Little Red Hen” the version I have chosen requires you to listen and imagine the characters because there are no pictures! Enjoy the story telling. Can you then tell the story to your grown up??
Take care all keep in touch through emails and photos
Mrs Heap, Mrs Coleman and Mrs Penn
Ps: I have collected some flowers and placed them under some books to flatten them? Have you done this? I have to wait at least 5 days before I can take a look : Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday~ I will look on Saturday!! Mrs Penn!
