Friday 27th March

Good Morning year 5,

Well, what an unusual week it has been. I am so glad that the sun has come out, enabling us all to spend some time in our gardens, get windows open and make the most of the daily exercise.

Over the next two weeks, please keep up the essentials: Reading daily, practising your spellings/handwriting using the 5/6 spellings list and daily times tables practice…and yes, Maths Prodigy! Year-5-or-6-Spellings-Whole-Year-Tick-Box.docx

UPDATE: I have been finding my way around the Prodigy site this morning. The review reports I can see for each of your profiles are showing some inconsistent scores. Please make sure you are thinking about the questions and taking a little time to ensure you answer them correctly. The website uses your answers to decide what level of questions you need next. I have allocated you all an assessment to complete on decimal numbers and rounding. Please take care when completing this so that I know whether you need more practice on this area of maths or are ready to move on. Thanks in advance!

Keep active, both inside and out, making the most of websites such as Joe Wicks, Just Dance and GoNoodle – I’m sure there will be even more options by the time you have read this!

A reminder about your Easter Project:

In art, we have been looking at different mythological creatures. We have learned that these were often made by combining different animals (sometimes even humans). Please research a mythical beast of your choice. You can present this in any way you would like (PPT on a USB stick, Poster, information text etc).

You need to know at least:

  • Where did the mythical beast originate?
  • What does the mythical beast do?
  • What creatures are combined to make the mythical creature?
  • What is the story that links to the mythical creature?

Please also design your own mythical beast. It would be great if you could draw/paint/create it as a presentation piece to share with the class. If you are able to upload a photo of you doing this, I would love to see your progress!

A challenge for you all…when you are next online, google the positive impacts of our communities slowing down and reducing transport. Some of the images (such as in Venice) are really quite extraordinary.

Fab resources I’ve noticed online:

  • World of David Walliams – daily audiobook
  • The maths factor – free maths sessions from Carol Vorderman
  • Prodigy Maths
  • Joe Wicks – P.E. Sessions
  • Scratch.mit.edu – coding activities
  • Rosetta Stone – 3 months free French learning

There will be soo many more out there that you are using, if there are any particularly good sights you would like to recommend, send me an email through this website and I’ll share with the rest of our year 5 team.

Look after yourselves,

Miss Shopland

Happy Thursday!

Good morning all,

I hope you are still all well and are managing to enjoy the sunshine.

Today’s maths challenge question is:

I’ve not yet managed to sign up to Carol Vorderman’s maths factor, I’d be really keen to know your thoughts if anyone has managed to sign up and have a go at the daily activities?

Please keep practising your Times Tables daily as well as using maths Prodigy.

For today’s literacy please log on to Discovery Espresso, KS2 English, Grammar & Punctuation, Punctuation and then watch the video and complete the activities on Using apostrophes to show singular and plural possession and Using commas to clarify meaning.

David Walliams will be releasing a free audiobook at 11:00 today @ https://www.worldofdavidwalliams.com/elevenses/ For those of you that like a routine, a new book is shared at 11:00 daily, however you can access any he has previously shared on his website at any time.

I am completing Joe Wicks’ workout with my achy legs in our classroom today! It feels very strange without you all, but I must admit I’m glad you couldn’t all see me attempting the Spiderman workout moves yesterday!

Wednesday 25th March

Good morning all,

I’d like to start by sharing my first thought of the day with you – I wonder how many others (of the 1.4 million people who took part) have woken up with slightly achy legs today following Joe Wicks’ P.E. lesson yesterday?!

Maths tasks for the day is more rounding decimals! Today I have put together some challenge questions for you to discuss with family members at home. Click on the word Maths the word document:   Maths

Keep practising your times tables as much as possible, chalks in the garden are a brilliant way to practice, especially when the sun is out 🙂

For Literacy today, please write your own relative clauses about mythical beasts. Look back at the relative clause videos from the last two days to remind yourself of what a relative clause should include and where the punctuation is needed. If you have not yet started your mythical beast research, you could write a sentence about a Minotaur, a Griffin, a Fairy and a Merman. I have uploaded the 5/6 words list below, please include as many words as possible. Year-5-or-6-Spellings-Whole-Year-Tick-Box

I hope you are all finding time to read at home and record your comments into your contact book. It is important to make times in the day to do this – when you do it will need to fit with your family.

To support our next History topic, please log on to Discovery Education Espresso, go to KS2, History, Anglo Saxons, Factfiles. Here you can read the information about each area of Anglo-Saxon history. You could record your favourite fact from each fact file into your contact book.

I hope you have another fab day, I’ll be working out with you all (and Joe Wicks) again at 9 am.

Keep uploading your learning – everything I have received so far has been just brilliant.

Tuesday 24th March

Good morning year 5!

I hope you enjoyed your day yesterday and remembered some of those ‘silver linings’ we talked about in class last week.

Today’s literacy learning continues on from yesterday’s on relative clauses. Please visit the BBC bitesize website and visit their video and activity on relative clauses. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zwwp8mn/articles/zsrt4qt

Tomorrow’s literacy learning will be having a go at applying some relative clauses to your Mythical Beasts research and design e.g. The Minotaur, who had enormous horns, looked very scary.

Today’s maths learning is to round the numbers below to 1 decimal place (one-tenth).

Rounding-Decimal-Numbers-to-One-Decimal-Place

Keep up the physical activity while you’re at home, Arthur and I will be taking part in Joe Wick’s P.E. session on Youtube this morning!

Please keep going with your Easter Mythical Beasts projects and remember to do some daily reading and spelling practice. I will keep checking my emails for any questions or uploads of learning, keep in touch!

Life Education

We found out that chocolate has a drug in it! (caffeine.)

We learned about healthy eating.

I think everyone loved the Life Education Bus.

The Life Education bus was really good because we learned that it is NOT good to smoke. You could get lung cancer!

No one in our class will smoke now.
