Food for Thought
Good morning all!
I hope you are continuing to make the most of this time together and are discovering talents that you never knew you had…
This week’s overarching theme for your suggested activities is food and nutrition. I have pulled together some activity ideas that I think you may enjoy having a go at over the week. As always, these are suggestions and are not compulsory. I have also added some maths, reading and writing activities at the bottom of this post for anyone who wishes to have a little more structure to their day.
Monday
This week we would like you to keep a food diary to document what you eat each day. To help you please see the Eatwell Guide published by the British Nutrition Foundation. This will provide some background information on the UK’s healthy eating model.
lEatwell-Guide British Nutrition Foundation
How you present your food diary is entirely up to you (and probably based on what resources you have at home!) Using the guide above, you could include the food group and nutritional value of each meal that you are eating.
I also thought you might like to pick up the learning we have previously studied on where our food comes from and what the environmental impacts of the foods we eat are. To do this, you would need to look at where the food was produced (on it’s label) and then google how it was most likely transported. You could then create a Food miles card for each food item. I’d love to hear about which foods have travelled the furthest and whether there were any surprises!
Nutrition Wordsearch If there are any words you do not know the meaning of in this word search you could look them up!
Tuesday
Today I thought it might be fun to carry out a survey of favourite foods for as many people as possible in your family. (This was prompted by my grandparent’s desire to discuss every meal with me each time I phone them!) If you are talking to people online or on the phone – you could involve them in a survey you have created!
Fruit top trumps This activity is a follow-on from yesterday as it will require finding out where your foods have come from and their environmental impact as well as scoring them for their packaging (or lack of!) and whether they are organic.
You could also complete the Eatwell-Guide—Worksheet-153 to see how balanced your meals are each day.
Don’t forget your food diary entry for the today!
Wednesday – What is the impact on our teeth?
Teeth and Digestion information
Read through the document to remind yourselves of the role your teeth play in digesting the food we eat. Use the information to label your teeth and then have a go at the crossword. Teeth Labelling Activity Sheet Teeth Crossword
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z27kng8 watch the video clips on the BBC Bitesize page to learn about the digestive system and complete the activity quiz.
A practical activity to see how the digestive system works: digestive-system-investigation (This is basically showing how we absorb what we need and then ‘get rid of’ the waste!)
Don’t forget your food diary entry for the today!
Thursday
Watch the video which is embedded in the picture on the first slide. What happens to the leftovers?
Can we reduce food waste?
Design an action plan to help combat food waste in your homes.
Onew way of reducing food waste in your home could be to make your own compost bin? Or make your own indoor wormery? Follow the link below for step-by-step guides on how to do this: https://verticalveg.org.uk/how-to-make-your-own-wormery/
Don’t forget your food diary entry for the today!
Additional resources, activities and ideas:
Maths: 1 – reading scales 2 -Grams and Kilograms 3 -Weight conversion 4 -Weight addition
I have suggested this order for completing the maths tasks as each day will then build on the previous.
A massive well done to those of you that are continuing to access Maths Prodigy! I receive a weekly update on the amount and level of questions you are successfully answering and I am really impressed!
Spellings: Vegetable, vehicle, sufficient, temperature, restaurant, muscle, individual, foreign, environment, convenience, category, average

Monday 4th May- It’s Star Wars day!
Hello everyone!
May the 4th be with you! I’d love to see if any of you do anything special to celebrate Star Wars and The Force today!
I hope you had an enjoyable weekend? The weather this looking a bit grey so we will be focusing on food this week as we can do this inside. If any of you have any ‘My News’ writing you want me to see, feel free to send me a photo. An example of how you can write a great one is here. My news example
Make sure, whatever you do, you keep reading. Bug Club is all updated for reading, spelling and grammar, please complete the activities fully so I can see when you need the next one.
This week’s Math’s focus is about Telling the time. you are all pretty good at this so you should be able to do this quite well, but practice is the key to being able to do it fluently, so this week, make sure you are reading time as much as you can. Here is a copy of the working wall that we put together to remnind us how we read a clock.
This week, the daily suggestions we will be giving will all be around the food that we eat.
The first step is to start a food diary, recording all of the food we eat each day. We can keep this going until Friday and then analyse (analyse means look at carefully and think about) what foods we have in our diet.
Here is my food diary for Saturday so you can see what I mean.

I’ve made a sheet for you to use if you want to, My food diary for or you can just keep your own record.
Tomorrow, I will send you some links so you can research what are the FOOD GROUPS we need to have in our diet to keep ourselves in tip top health.
Wednesday, we can use this knowledge to plan a balanced meal (and maybe queue up to get the ingredients!)
Thursday, with the help of your adults, we can prepare, cook and serve it and Friday we can evaluate our meal and diets.(think about how well things went)
I can’t wait until we are all together as a class again!
All the best

Monday 4th May 2020
Hello everyone
I hope you were able to enjoy the weekend?
On Friday Mrs Heap and I enjoyed chatting on the phone with some of you, those we missed, or were out, we will endeavour to call you on Wednesday. The weather this weekend has been changeable; sunny on Saturday and a bit rainy on Sunday but both weathers are great to have walk in as the world can look so different. You have continued to send me photos of your fantastic learning and especially enjoying going outside for a walk!
- The wonderful Miber woods!
- So many places spotted by Brooke do you recognise them?
It has been great to hear and see how much you are enjoying Mrs Heap’s rhyme time. Today is the last of the rhymes but I think that, like Brooke, Ching Ching has been out exploring and there will be new video coming very soon. Please enjoy the last rhyme time and I think you will all be moving along to this!

I am so humbled by the ideas that you come up with at home and the games and things you are doing.
Cyrus’ mum told me that they had planted seeds from a tomato in half an egg shell in some soil and the seeds were beginning to grow!!
Alfie made his own skittles game using toilet rolls. This fun game develops his coordination, numeral recognition and calculating skills!
- Toilet roll skittles
- Skittle games made and played
Brooke has enjoyed playing so many games and also making a story book called “I miss my friends” something we can all emphasise with.
Cooking too still is a favourite home activity Kieran is especially proud of his gingerbread biscuits!
- Making up stories and books
- Mixing
- Lovely biscuits to eat
- So many games to play and toys to place and arrange
Why not try some of your friends ideas and let us know which ones you enjoyed.
Have you been able to find any snails and look at them closely? If you put them on a see through lid you can really watch muscles ripple as they move!
Challenge: On your daily walk collect a few wild flowers, or grasses or leaves to bring home to press. All you need is kitchen paper and something heavy~ books work well. Place the flowers on a piece of kitchen roll and then put a sheet on the top, then place something heavy on the top (5 big books would do!) leave for at least five days before you take the books off and look at your flattened flowers you should be able to make a picture with them.

Remember to ask your parents before you pick any flowers
You have a choice of two stories today. On The foundation stage home learning Base 1 you can listen to “The enormous Turnip” and below click the link to listen too “Mad about Minibeasts!”
Have a good Monday and “May the fourth be with you!!”

…. How did you manage with the spirals last week? Remember scribbling is Vital so that eventually when muscles are strong, images start to develop. Continue to explore Spiral drawing today and see if you can complete your own spiral image, your spirals might be small, large fast or slow and controlled. I wonder how you could use spirals in a picture? The more you draw and scribble the stronger your finger and wrist muscles will be…P.E for fingers! Can you remember how we scribble fast to music in our write dance sessions? Maybe you can draw your spirals while listening to your favourite song?

Amazing Scribbles
Today’s Challenge is from Mrs Breakwell …. How many big snails and how many little snails can you find?
When you find your snail place it on glass so that you can see the underneath when the snail is crawling across the glass. Can you see its muscles moving?
Second Challenge from Mrs Breakwell : Dandelion trumpet challenge! Have you ever made a dandelion trumpet? Find a chunky stem and remove the head, give it a quick wipe and then blow. It can be tricky and may not work first time, GOOD LUCK!
- Im sure you have blown a dandelion clock before
- But have you made a Dandelion crown?
- or have you ever made music with a Dandelion?
I’ve added the same story as last week to develop their memory skills… Can you join in with any of the words this time? Can you remember who comes next to help pull up the Enormous Turnip?
Today’s video is Mrs Heaps last Rhyme time session this week. Tomorrow you will find out that she has taken Ching Ching on a listening walk. Click here for the words..Day Five

Today is the last day of our week of inventions. How has it gone for you? Have a go at creating your final model of your invention. Test it, does it work? Share it with someone in your family, can they use it?
Evaluate your final invention using the evaluation sheet. Think about what has made you feel proud when creating your machine. What will you do next time?
Continue with your reading, BugClub and BugClub activities.
Enjoy some Friday maths games! Have a look at www.ictgames.com. I enjoy the Whack a Mole game. https://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/whackAMole/index.html

Happy May Day all!
Tomorrow will be Alesha’s birthday and she is 5 years old! ( she is our only birthday this month – May in Base 2 ) We wish her a very happy day!

I know you have been enjoying Mrs Heap’s rhyme time and I was sent a video today by Alesha of her beating her numbered tins and singing 1,2,3,4,5! We have another two rhyme times from Mrs Heap one today and one for Monday.
Enjoy today’s song and instrument making I think this you will all know this rhyme!
As usual click the blue writing for the words of this song! Day Four
How did you get on yesterday finding snails and perhaps making a snail obstacle course ?
On Base 1 post yesterday Miss Butler suggested you try drawing spirals you could try this ~take a look at the post from yesterday. I think you could also try using your collage skills to create a snail like the famous artist Matisse. Take a look can you see the spiral shape of the shell? Have a try and send us photo of your efforts!
Did you all manage to name Mrs Coleman’s Knitted characters from the story “Jack and The Beanstalk” in the photo on yesterday’s post! Your Challenge is to make your own characters from the story and then tell the story with these. You could make a show for your family to come and watch complete with tickets! To help you I have a video of this story for you to watch. Enjoy!
We all wish you a happy weekend with your family keeping safe in your homes and on your daily walks!
Mrs Penn, Mrs Heap and Mrs Coleman
Mrs Boulton says…
• Try playing pick up sticks using straws or twigs from your garden? Put the straws or twigs in a pile and try and pick them up without others moving – if you do it, you keep them! You could even collect twigs to play with when you go out for your daily exercise.
• If you’re lucky enough to have a garden, go for a bug hunt – see what you can find, you could take photos or draw a picture. Make sure you treat the bugs carefully!
• Play ‘Follow my Leader’ – choose someone in your family to lead and to walk all around the house doing actions – everyone else follows and does the same. Take turns to lead.
• Make hand shadows on the wall. Ask your parents to help you to use a lamp as a source of light. Say what you see, take it in turns
Mrs Dore says…..
• Host a movie night – plan by making tickets and posters for the movie that you’re going to watch. Prepare a snack such as crisps or popcorn. set the room like a cinema and show people to their seats. Enjoy the film!
• A garden is a great place to run around if you’re lucky enough to have one. Ask your parents to play catch with you. If you can’t find a ball, roll up some paper or a toilet roll tube and throw that!
• What’s going on outside? Look outside your window and count how many people, cars, lorries and bikes you see going past, Make a list or draw pictures of what you see.
• Fancy a healthy snack. Make fruit kebabs with a grown up. If you have no sticks see how many pieces of fruit that you can fit on a fork. In fact do the fork thing, it sounds like fun!
• It’s the ladybird time of year. See if you can find any in your garden. How many spots do they have? Draw or write down what you find.
