Hello!

This weeks home learning, which is now due on Friday due to our Escot trip, is detailed below:

Dictionary Skills Challenge 2 ← This is the standard challenge given to most children.

Dictionary Skills Challenge 1 ← This is the challenge that was given to selected children.

Spellings – LCWC WC 20th May 2019 ← Select your group’s spellings and don’t forget to complete your word investigation – a digital copy is coming!

As always, if you have any questions, come and see me!

Exeter City Football Training

Year 5 have been fortunate enough to get involved in an exciting opportunity offered to us by Exeter City Football club.

We have been enjoying playing new games and learning new skills together – and what glorious weather to do that in!

Planet Rap

It’s no secret that Year 5 love a bit of a sing-song, so at the end of term, I introduced them to an awesome rap about the planets. They got into it pretty quickly and enjoyed learning about the planets this way.

Rio and Charlie definitely deserve a big shout out for putting their all into their raps!

(I’ve been cutting some quick clips of children getting really into it. Watch this space!)

Astronaut Training

Today, Year 5 went through astronaut training, which was as close to the real deal as possible in a school!

Teams had to work together to demonstrate they had what was necessary to become an astronaut!

The children had to tackle a memory challenge that also tested their fitness!

Another challenge was the dreaded ‘Time and Space Challenge’ in which children had to get into an incredibly dark and cramped space. Whilst in there, they had to lace and tie a shoe, but they also had to come out when they thought exactly 2 minutes had passed. A truly tricky test!

Children also worked together to complete the ‘International Space Station Docking Challenge’. With one or more team-mates blindfolded, clear instructions had to be given otherwise there would be a disaster!

Putting on their astronaut gloves, children had to tackle tricky puzzles whilst wearing notoriously difficult-to-work-with astronaut (garden) gloves.

Finally, the children had to complete the “Team-Building Challenge” in which they had to build the highest tower possible using paper, paperclips and whiteboards – no verbal instructions could be given!

Be Internet Kind

Everyone in Year 5 is working towards becoming an ‘Internet Legend’.

To achieve that, we all need to understand what it means to be sharpalertsecurekind and brave on the internet.

This week, we have been learning about being ‘Internet Kind‘. We have completed loads of activities that have got us thinking about how we can spread positivity online to block out negativity and make the internet a kind place to be. We also learned about the importance of reporting cyber-bullying every time we see it.

Be Internet Secure

Everyone in Year 5 is working towards becoming an ‘Internet Legend’.

To achieve that, we all need to understand what it means to be sharpalertsecurekind and brave on the internet.

This week, we have been learning about being ‘Internet Secure‘. We have completed loads of activities that have helped us to realise the importance of being responsible in protecting our personal information online. We have worked together to identify strong and weak passwords, using what we’ve learned to identify what makes a secure password – always create a password that is at least 8 characters long using uppercase letters (ABC) and lowercase letters (abc) with numbers (123) and symbols (!£%).

Reality vs Photoshop – Can you guess correctly?

Today is Internet Safety Day and we have been learning about internet safety over the past few weeks. Most recently, we learned about being ‘Internet Alert’, which is all about spotting the differences between what is real and fake. During our session, we talked about fake pictures floating around the internet and how they can fool even the smartest experts. However, the children in Year 5 thought that they could easily tell the difference – so here we are.

In today’s Time to Think session, I gave the children a large selection of pictures – some were real and some were fake. The children had to sort them into two groups – real or fake. Easy right? WRONG.

For almost every picture, the children answered incorrectly – being ‘Internet Alert’ isn’t as easy as it sounds. The most important thing that Year 5 learned from this session was that it is always wise to question EVERYTHING online.

I have attached the pictures below our class pictures so that you can have a go at home.

PICTURES COMING SOON

Be Internet Alert

Everyone in Year 5 is working towards becoming an ‘Internet Legend’.

To achieve that, we all need to understand what it means to be sharpalertsecurekind and brave on the internet.

This week, we have been learning about being ‘Internet Alert‘. We have completed loads of activities that have helped us to develop our understanding of risks online and their potential impact on our lives. We have found out about phishing and what to do if we see something that is too good to be true – don’t bite that phishing hook!

What’s in the bag?

Today we had a go at identifying different materials by feel alone. We had to use our knowledge of different properties to help us. We thought about whether something felt rough, smooth, soft, hard, flexible, etc to help us work out each material. We had a lot of fun exploring!

Be Internet Sharp

Everyone in Year 5 is working towards becoming an ‘Internet Legend’.

To achieve that, we all need to understand what it means to be sharp, alert, secure, kind and brave on the internet.

This week, we have been learning about being ‘Internet Sharp‘. We have completed loads of activities that have helped us to understand about being considerate of what we do and say online – it stays with us forever as our ‘digital footprint‘.
