Year 1
Applying our learning from Road Safety week to our SUSTRANS project.
On Tuesday this week, the children in year 1 and 2 teamed up in mixed year teams to take on a creative challenge project.
The challenge they were set was to create something which would help someone who was doing the same SUSTRANS project as them to do it safely.
The SUSTRANS project is looking at supporting and encouraging healthy and environmentally friendly ways of getting to and from school as alternatives to driving a car. Last week was road safety week, so it seemed to make sense to bring the learning from last week into this week so children could really develop a clear picture of how to get from A to B safely.
The ideas they come up with were great and the safety messages were clear, even for those who are still coming in a car!
“Hold hands with an adult when you walk to school.” “Look both ways when you cross the road on your scooter.” “Make sure you are wearing a helmet when you ride a bike.” “Wear your seatbelts.” “Don’t distract the driver.”
Our reading assemblies
The children have started using their reading and listening skills for a real purpose and they are loving it.
The Year 2s wanted an audience for their reading and the year 1s wanted to hear stories being read to them, so this fitted perfectly.
We are looking and thinking about how this can develop around our reciprocal reading approach and are really looking forward to watching both year 1s and year 2 s grow as readers and listeners together.

Stay and Play is back!
Just to let everyone know that Stay and Play is back on and it is bigger and better than ever!
Please try and pop along and give it a go. It would be great to see you!Following the success of the previous years, we have seen huge numbers of parents and children staying and playing together afterschool on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We are now getting some foundation stage parents popping along as well as some parents with children who have moved on into year 3. It is great to see everyone!
If you haven’t been along, please pop in and give it a go. it is a great environment to relax and just enjoy time with your child. It also gives you and opportunity to have those little chats with the adults that might not happen otherwise.
We hope we see you there.

R-time, Building Relationships.
We have had some great conversations in our R-time around what working together looks like. This week the children had the challenge of working in pairs to create ‘something’ out of three pieces of Lego. As always the children greeted their partner with a smile and kind words, using eye contact and showing their partner using their body language that they are a team. I was really impressed by how all of the children showed their partner that they cared by taking it in turns to speak and listening carefully to each other. We explored how showing our partner that we care by using our R-time skills filled them with good feelings and then that filled us with good feelings too! How great is that?
Here Jacob and Alfred worked in a team to build using their blocks. They couldn’t decide whose idea to use so they made both!
Fridays for the Future
One of our families respectfully informed us that they were going to attend the Friday for Future gathering in Exeter this Friday.
This inspired us and gave us a great opportunity to come together as a KS 1 team to explore aspects of geography, history and citizenship with the children within a thoroughly up to date context. Using first hand accounts and internet resources, we were able to explore what Fridays For Future is, the science, theories and opinions behind it, why it exists and the inspirational personalities driving and supporting it.
Whilst we could not support or encourage families to keep their children out of school, we can be hugely respectful and understanding to any individual who feels the need to make such a choice.
We Love Books!
We have been using our R-Time skills in our reading by sharing, listening carefully to each other and taking turns. We have been exploring our Special Book Box and reading together. Two children were keen to share their book with an adult in the room talking about the pictures in “Good Knight Sleep Tight”.
We Are Writers.
Year 1 have been thinking carefully about their pencil grip. We have practiced creating our alien hands which go CHOMP! because they like to eat pencils, pens and paintbrushes. We have then had a go at looking through the gap created by our fingers so we know that we are ready to write.
R-time with Year 2
We have started to come together as a Key Stage on Tuesday morning to share an R-time activity together. This week the children worked in teams to draw around each other’s hands on one small piece of paper. The children firstly greeted each other with a smile, sharing some kind words before discussing how they were going to draw around each other’s hands.
Here Sophia, Millie and Lilly are working together to include everyone in their group in drawing around their hands. Great teamwork!
