Wednesday 6th May. It’s a wonderful word day!
Hello all.
I hope you are all well and happy. It’s Wednesday, so send in those wonderful words you have found this week.
Just to remind everyone, Bug Club are going to be updating their website on 16th May so you will have to type your username and password again. If you click the show me button, it will remind you of your details so you can make a note of them before this happens, but if anyone has any problems, just let me know and we will get them sorted.
For those of you who are accessing this website regularly and using it to inform your daily activities, today can be about planning a meal that would give you everything you need, a bit of protein, carbohydrate, vitamins and minerals, fat and fibre. There is a planning sheet here if you want to use it. Planning a balanced meal
If you want to give yourself a bit of a challenge, how would you make a balanced meal without using any meat? If you want to be a proper master chef, you could think about the flavours in your meal.
Tomorrow, if you want, you could actually try to prepare your meal for your family, but you will need the adults to help you as this might mean you need to use sharp things or hot things.
The maths focus this week is telling the time. Have a look at Monday’s post for the details. The working wall that reminds you what you can do is here.
For anyone who has got this skill mastered, can you work out what time these clocks are telling. They are back to front and upside down.
Tomorrow is a Stay and Play day and I will give you a few simple ideas for games you can play that don’t need boards or batteries!
Take care, stay safe and do what you need to do to keep yourselves happy.
All the best
Mr F.
Wednesday 6th May Bug hunting in a book! and in your house!!!
Good Morning Everyone
It was a wet day yesterday. I wonder if you managed to get outside at the end of the day when the rain stopped and the wind calmed down?
I wonder how you keep physically active when you are inside when its so wet? Do you dance to your favourite music? Do you try different ways of moving around your house? Do you remember a few weeks ago I set a challenge using a piece of masking tape and asked you to find different ways of moving over or across the line.
I wonder if today you could try walking on your hands?.. Have you ever been turned into a wheel barrow by your mum or dad? How far could you walk on your hands?
I decided that I need to let my plants grow a little more before I share a photo!! I keep seeing your brilliant growing, my plants are tiny in comparison! THIS IS NOT MINE…. A family sent me this FAB picture of there plants ….They are very healthy and strong.
Look at this snail that I was sent. Another great spiral but this uses cutting as the main skill. Cutting a spiral out is a hard skill you might wish to try. Strong finger work is needed for this task.
- What tiny things did you find for your egg box?
- Look at these pom pom pets a family created
- The pom pom pets were small enough to fit them into their own mini space.
I wonder if you can make a mini insect? maybe out of pompoms if you have any at home?
I wonder if it is wet again tomorrow, Could play hide and seek with one of the smallest items you found? That’s a hard hide and seek. You will have to get little clues to help your family find them.
Today’s story involves hide and seek with mini items.. You need to look with great care to find one tiny caterpillar on each page. Try these pages before you read the story…CAN YOU SPOT THEM??
- Use your super looking skills?
- Can you find a caterpillar
- on all three of these pages in today’s story?
DID YOU FIND THE CATERPILLARS ON THE THREE PAGES? Now listen to the story and you have 10! caterpillars to spot. Can you find them all. remember to pause the pages so you can look with care. ENJOY
Have a lovely day and keep smiling and enjoying your time together as a family.
From Miss Butler, Mrs Breakwell, Miss Lofthouse.
Wednesday 6th May 2020
Good day everyone!
What a wet start to Tuesday! But a great day to find those small garden creatures especially snails I counted: 11 on the compost heap! They were all different sizes! Did you spot some? If you have some play dough can you make yourself a family of snails? How many family snail members can you make? Mummy, daddy, brother, sister, baby, Nanny, Granddad,Aunty, cousin?
I hope that you enjoyed the story of the “Little Red Hen” yesterday. Do you think the hen should’ve shared the bread or not?
Today work with your family to create a story. Collect up to 10 toys (maybe start with 5) and place on a tray. You are now going to take turns to make up a story by adding an item from the tray. How will the story begin? “once upon a time…” maybe or “One rainy day…” or “Long, long ago..” Take an item from the tray and it must be part of your story carry on creating a story together using all the items and the last person needs to end the story. Maybe saying “The End!” or “they were happy ever after.” Can you remember and retell the story. Maybe a grown up could write down the words each person used in the story! Have fun and enjoy creating a story together. Use the same toys to make up a new story.
Did you have a go at making a sandwich for lunch yesterday? Perhaps today you could try make a simple bread pizza choosing your own toppings:
(adults to support this activity but let your child try as many skills as possible!)
- wash hands
- help slice some French bread or rolls into slices
- spread some tomato puree or some tin tomatoes
- grate some cheese
- add other vegetables: perhaps you may choose: mushroom sliced. sweet corn, a pepper sliced. You may want to add some meat: cut up ham or salami
- add dry herbs and salt and pepper (optional)
- place on an oven tray and bake in a hot oven for 5-10 mins (grown up job)
- ENJOY
Pizza is the theme for today’s story. It is called “Pete the Cat and the Perfect Pizza Party” I love Pete the Cat books hope you like it? This story made me smile!
Did you notice all the “p” words? Pete’s perfect pizza party this is called alliteration can you think of other words that start with the same sounds to create your own sentence? I have this suggestion: Snails, slithering silently slowly and softly!
we wish you all a happy Wednesday doing the things you enjoy

Tuesday 5th May 2020
Hello All
I hope that you have had a good start to this week?
Yesterday I was busy working from home answering emails and doing some thinking!! It has been fun seeing your photos and answering your queries in the emails.
As yesterday I have seen that like me you are enjoying your daily walks! I have uploaded a picture of Guy and his big sister Mia splashing in a stream with their wellie boots on of course! Have you tried this? It is such fun and do you know that even with boots on you can feel the change in temperature of the water!
Yesterday was the last of Mrs Heap’s rhyme times. It has been so good to hear about how you have enjoyed these and tried making the instruments.
- Enjoying Rhyme time together
- Making a rain maker
Cyrus and his family have been using YouTube: “just Dance” to do a daily dance together~ this might appeal to you!
Mrs Heap has been busy over the weekend and she and her husband have made a new video about Ching Ching. In this video Ching Ching is disturbed by lots of sounds. The listening skill activities you may have tried last week should help you to hear the sounds in this video. (If you missed the activities go back to last weeks posts and give them a try Tuesday 28th April and Wednesday 29th April) Remember listening is a vital learning skill and one we need to practice to perfect.
I also received an email from Ella who has been learning how to make bread! It seems cooking and baking are activities you all really like to do at home and the skills and learning that your child gets from these activities are many! In the photos of Ella below we can see how she is really listening to follow verbal instructions, how she is using careful measuring skills to place the correct amounts in the bowl and how she has discovered that things can change(the yeast fizzes, the dough grows in size) and the immense pride in the finished product!
- measuring
- watching for change
- ready to bake
- mmmm lovely bread
Today’s Challenge: To make your own sandwich for lunch!
(grown ups support but let your child do all the skills themselves)
- Wash your hands
- take 2 slices of bread
- use a knife to spread the butter
- add your filling choice of filling: Maybe: jam or marmite~ spread onto the bread, cheese use a grater to grate some cheese and sprinkle on your bread, ham (you choose)
- place the bread on top
- cut in half with a knife,
- cut each half into half again
- Enjoy What shape are your sandwiches? Can you think how you could make a different shaped sandwich?
This activity is fun but full of so much learning! Listening, keeping healthy, using tools like knives and graters for a purpose, quantity only a small amount of spread or jam, shapes, fractions !!
Ella’s bread making has reminded me of the story of “The Little Red Hen” the version I have chosen requires you to listen and imagine the characters because there are no pictures! Enjoy the story telling. Can you then tell the story to your grown up??
Take care all keep in touch through emails and photos
Mrs Heap, Mrs Coleman and Mrs Penn
Ps: I have collected some flowers and placed them under some books to flatten them? Have you done this? I have to wait at least 5 days before I can take a look : Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday~ I will look on Saturday!! Mrs Penn!
Tuesday 5th May Dawn Chorus, Small and Large Treasures
Good Morning …HELLO EVERYONE……….Have you heard the birds again!!
On my morning walk yesterday birds singing was all I could hear… it was just so beautiful. I had not realised that it was International Dawn Chorus day on 3rd May. The birds were certainly singing their hearts out …as they got ready for the busy day ahead! Have you heard the birds sing louder and louder on your walks?
I know that flower pressing has captured your interest. It is a beautiful, classic art. The images I have been sent will last for years in your homes. They are GORGEOUS and contain real natural items.

Beautiful Natural images

In a gallery this would be worth a fortune..
Cooking has also continued to be a strong interest. Helping to cook dinner and cooking playdough. You are both looking so grown up and skilled.
- Helping to cook dinner
- EVEN stirring the dinner ..well done
- Stirring the playdough…Handwriting and you didn’t know it!!
Yesterday as well as hearing the birds singing I tried Mrs Breakwell’s challenge of blowing the dandelion trumpet...I WAS RUBBISH! I could not make any sound at all. I hope you were all better than me.
I JUST love the different ways that you are being creative as families. Look at this LIGHT…..
I wonder what creative explorations you will try this week? I’ve started crocheting mini snails for my nephew’s birthday. Mine is a little bigger!
.
So today’s challenge is about making Mini collections … Below are two photos of an egg box a family used when they were completing the counting to ten challenge. BRILLIANT THINKING. The last photo shows how we all find and discover different things that we find fascinating and want to keep. What will you find?
- Numbers written onto the box
- Items you like selected to fit into your container.
- What would you choose to collect?
- What small items will you collect and put into your egg box sections?
- What is the smallest item that you can find to place in your egg box?
Miss Lofthouse wondered if you might like to send a HUGE hug to someone special and to the people you miss. It will bring a HUGE smile to their faces!
How BIG will your hug be? Who will you send your HUGE hug too?
- How big will your hug be?
- How big will your hands be?
- How creative will you be?
Thank you for your kind messages about Mrs Heap’s Rhyme time sessions…..I keep forwarding your messages and she will reply to you this week. Today Mrs Heap has a new session called…‘sounds around’ .It made me smile and laugh…Enjoy.
Today’s story has a small balloon which grows into a HUGE Balloon..…!
F2 families:- Please do let me know if you are having any difficulty accessing bug club, I have had three families telling me about issues. I will help in any way I can and find a way that works for you and your child to ensure that they can access reading books.
Enjoy your day and remember to keep doing things that make you happy. Keep smiling and Keep being active in your learning. Miss Butler, Miss Lofthouse and Mrs Breakwell.

For those of you who are accessing this website regularly and using it to inform your daily activities, today can be about finding out about our food, what is in food and why do we need to eat it.
There are 6 things we need to have in our diet to stay healthy. These are called FOOD GROUPS.
Protein carbohydrate vitamins and mineral fat water fibre
Too much of anything will make us unhealthy. We need to have a little bit of everything so we have a BALANCED DIET. Diet is the foods we eat, balanced means things are in the right amount.
Have a look at these websites. You might want to make a list of foods that we could eat which give us each food group.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/z3n2tfr – balanced diet
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zrffr82/articles/zppvv4j – tells you about protein, carbohydrate, fats

Week beginning 4th May – Food for Thought !
Hi everyone. I hope this finds you all safe and well. Last week was a very exciting one and I am so pleased to learn about the amazing inventions you have been making. Thank you for sharing them with me throughout the week.
This week we are focusing our learning on Food and Exercise. The food we eat has a major influence on how we feel and on the amounts of energy we have throughout the day. This also has huge influence on our focus and on our readiness for play and learning.
Food For Thought
Monday:
Keeping track of what we eat. This week we want you to keep a food diary to document what you eat each day. To help you please see the Eatwell Guide published by the British Nutrition Foundation. This will provide some background information on the UK’s healthy eating model.

Mr. Whitty
Week beginning 04/05/20 – Food For thought
This week we are learning about keeping healthy by thinking about the food we eat and the exercise we enjoy. These have a major influence on how we feel and on the amounts of energy we have at our disposal throughout the day. This in turn has a huge effect on how prepared we are for play and learning.
Monday
Keeping track of what we eat.
Have a look at the Eatwell Guide published by the British Nutrition Foundation here:
It gives lots of interesting information about the balance of different kinds of food we need to keep healthy: Proteins, carbohydrates, dairy, fruit & veg.
Design a food diary to keep a record of what you eat each day this week. Record everything you eat – snacks and meals and everything! You WILL be surprised, I promise! Next to each food, find out which food group it belongs to – is it mainly a source of protein, carbohydrate, dairy, fruit & vegetable or mainly sugary? I’m going to do it too – I need to watch out for those sneaky snacks and biscuits though! As well as the food you eat each day, make sure you have a column on your food diary for exercise accomplished each day too. What kind of exercise was it, how long did you do it for? If you have a fancy watch or ‘phone app, you can note down how many calories you burnt off by exercising too! Hey try this:
https://healthyeater.com/calories-burned
You need to tell them your height, weight and age (13 minimum) for it to work – it calculates how many calories you burnt off with the exercise activity you did.
Tuesday
Update your food diary… honestly! Don’t miss anything out!
Food investigation – Where does our food come from?
Investigate ten food items that you regularly eat to see where they come from in the world. Banana, chicken nuggets, pizza… there are big concerns about ‘food miles’ where a type of food could be bought locally but supermarkets transport it from miles away, harming the environment by driving it to a store near you in a lorry. The lorry harms the environment by emitting pollution into the atmosphere. I know it’s usually cheaper in a supermarket but go on and prove it – how much does that food item cost in the local shop and how much does it cost in a big supermarket? Is it more expensive to buy fruit and vegetables in a supermarket or in a greengrocer’s? Find out by comparing prices you find online. Record next to the price, the distance the food has travelled – look it up on the supermarket website – it should tell you where the product comes from.
Wednesday
Update your food diary.
Today’s focus – Drinks.
What do you drink? Do you drink water, hot drinks, fizzy drinks or energy drinks? Investigate the amount of sugar that is in a range of drinks – you could do this in a table. What kind of drink is it and what percentage of it is sugar?
Design a poster for primary school children about the dangers of fizzy drinks and energy drinks. What would your advice to them be? We can still have fizzy drinks but there is a better time of day to have them. We need to make sure we are hydrated too: include advice on drinking enough water and the effect of different drinks on our teeth. How can you look after your teeth?
Thursday
Update your food diary
What happens with the food you don’t eat? Can we reduce food waste? What could you do with it? I have always fancied having a pig as a pet but my partner won’t let me have one. My pig would eat all of the leftovers from our meals so it would be good for the environment! What happens to the food you leave or throw out? Where does it go? Do you have a compost bin? How could that help reduce waste? Remember: reduce, reuse, recycle! Plan a strategy for your household – what are your next steps to make sure you deal with leftovers in a more environmentally-friendly way? If you plan to have a compost bin, find out how it works – what mixture of things need to go in there? Can I just put food leftovers in there or do I need other items too?
Friday
It’s a Bank Holiday today so no activities from me, other than to update your food and exercise diary. Enjoy your day everyone and meet you back here next week…
Mr Hankin
