Year 1
Wednesday 22nd April
Another glorious, sunny day today!
I stayed up last night but unfortunately didn’t see any meteors… However, I did spot a very bright Venus! Did you spot anything in the night sky?
Today’s activities you could do:
Talk to someone about their favourite song. Collect the information about the people in your family, neighbours, friends you’ve contacted… in the table Favourite songs collection
My favourite song is “You’ll be in my Heart” by Phil Collins. Give it a listen! Did you enjoy it? What instruments can you here being played?
Maths. Continuing to look at capacity and mass. Have at the Which is heavier activity. Use your own scales to have a go at weighing different things around your home.
Practice writing your set 3 words over the week handwriting tricky words. Can your use any of the high frequency words in a sentence?
Continue to use Bug Club for reading and phonics.
Continue to keep active! You could do this through Just Dance or Joe Wicks’ workout.
Continue to access Discovery Education (password in your red book). Make sure that you are on the English site!
Continue to access Phonics Play.
Continue to do the things that make you happy (for me that is going for a bike ride with Harry 🙂 ).
I hope you all have a wonderful Wednesday.
Big smiles and warm wishes

Good morning Year 1!
Music week continued…
I hope you had a good day yesterday.
Here are some more activities that you might choose to do today:
- Have a go on Phonics Play at https://new.phonicsplay.co.uk/
To log on use: username march20 password:home
- Tonight there is a meteor shower!
- What is a meteor? Ask someone in your family and research to decide on a definition.
- https://metro.co.uk/2020/04/20/will-lyrid-meteor-shower-peak-week-will-visible-tonight-12583029/ If you are able to, have a look out of the window tonight to see if you can see the meteors.
- What sound do you think a meteor might make? What could you use to make that sound? Create your own instrument to make the sound of a meteor.
- Maths. Measuring mass Complete the sheet and have a go at making your own scales. These are some scales that I’ve made using a cup and a ruler. What will you use?
I wonder if the glue is heavier or the scissors…

My Weekend News
I thought I would share something that will hopefully make you smile…
This weekend I took my bike out to Plymbridge Woods near my home. As I was cycling I noticed something in the path… It was a big, black and white, hairy creature that was making a strange sound. Can you guess what it could be? It was a cow! The cow decided to stand in the middle of the path which meant that I had to carefully walk my bike around it as I didn’t want to scare the cow. As I went on a bit further, I was met by more hairy creatures! However, these animals were smaller and white. They had hooves, like the cow, but the sound that they made was very different. You guessed it, it was a herd of sheep. This time I was able to slowly cycle my way around the sheep and made my way home back through the woods.
What would you do if you saw some animals blocking your path? I wonder if you could create a story about animals blocking your path…
What did you do this weekend? Remember you can write your diary entry in your red book.
Keep exploring!

Monday 20th April – Music Week
Good morning!
I hope you have all had a lovely weekend. I spoke to some of you last week about the introduction of ‘theme weeks’. This week I will be setting different activities all to do with the theme of music.
Here are some activities that you could be doing:
- Plan a sound walk. Can you draw a map to show where you could go? Could you use Google Maps to guide you?
- Go on a walk and take a note book or clipboard with you (if you are able to). Listen carefully for the different things you can hear. Record them on your paper. Were there any sounds that surprised you? What was the loudest sound you heard? What was the quietest?
- When you get home, see if you can recreate any of the sounds you heard. What could you use to help you? Think about how quiet or loud the sound was and what made the sound.
- Get active! Search on Youtube for Just Dance workouts. Which song did you choose to dance to today? Why?
- What is a “musical note”? Ask people in your family and research it. What did you find out? Record in your red book.
- Bug Club. A new book and activities have been allocated.
- Maths. Have a go at the Comparing Capacity (click to open PDF) activities. You can have a go at creating this activity in your kitchen with real cups of water and different sized containers!
Most importantly, make time to do things that make you happy today. I look forward to seeing the wonderful things you have been doing!
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Remember all of your activities can be shared through the school website.
Best wishes
Miss Hall 🙂
Have a Fun Friday!
It looks like the plants are having a break from the sun and enjoying a shower of rain today. Have you been out on walk in the rain? Don’t forget your coat and wellies! On your walk see it you can collect different things on the way e.g. sticks, rocks, leaves… When you get home, get crafty! How many things did you find? Can you use them to make the shape of different numbers? What numbers can you make? What can you create with the things you have found?
Today I had some wonderful conversations with you! It was so lovely to hear your voices and hear about all about the wonderful things you have been doing. For those of you I wasn’t able to reach, I will try again when I am in school next week.
Thank you to those of you who have messaged through the website with photos, messages and learning. It’s great to stay connected and see what you have been up to.
I hope you are all staying happy and healthy. Remember, we are still here to support you where we can.
Have a lovely weekend.

Thursday 16th April
Hi all!
I hope you have been able to enjoy the sunshine?
I have been spotting some arrays around around my home and I have created a little activity sheet for you if you click here –> Arrays home learning
Today has been a quieter day for me because Harry is back working at the hospital, so I am going to do some baking! Have you done any cooking? What did you cook/make?
I have got some left over Easter chocolate that I am going to use to bake some brownies. Here is a tried and trusted brownie recipe that I have used from BBC goodfood:
- 185g butter
- 185g dark chocolate
- 85g plain flour
- 40g cocoa powder
- 3 large eggs
- 275g golden caster sugar
- Cut 185g unsalted butter into small cubes and tip into a bowl. Break 185g dark chocolate into small pieces and drop into the bowl.
- Fill a small saucepan about a quarter full with hot water, then put the bowl on top so it rests on the rim of the pan, not touching the water. Put over a low heat until the butter and chocolate have melted, stirring occasionally to mix them.
- Remove the bowl from the pan. Alternatively, cover the bowl loosely with cling film and put in the microwave for 2 minutes on High. Leave the melted mixture to cool to room temperature.
- While you wait for the chocolate to cool, position a shelf in the middle of your oven and turn the oven on to 180C/ 160C fan/ gas 4.
- Using a shallow 20cm square tin, cut out a square of non-stick baking parchment to line the base. Tip 85g plain flour and 40g cocoa powder into a sieve held over a medium bowl. Tap and shake the sieve so they run through together and you get rid of any lumps.
- Chop 50g milk chocolate into chunks on a board.
- Break 3 large eggs into a large bowl and tip in 275g golden caster sugar. With an electric on maximum speed, whisk the eggs and sugar. They will look thick and creamy, like a milk shake. This can take 3-8 minutes, depending on how powerful your mixer is. You’ll know it’s ready when the mixture becomes really pale and about double its original volume. Another check is to turn off the mixer, lift out the beaters and wiggle them from side to side. If the mixture that runs off the beaters leaves a trail on the surface of the mixture in the bowl for a second or two, you’re there.
- Pour the cooled chocolate mixture over the eggy mousse, then gently fold together with a spatula. Plunge the spatula in at one side, take it underneath and bring it up the opposite side and in again at the middle. Continue going under and over in a figure of eight, moving the bowl round after each folding so you can get at it from all sides, until the two mixtures are one and the colour is a mottled dark brown. The idea is to marry them without knocking out the air, so be as gentle and slow as you like.
- Hold the sieve over the bowl of eggy chocolate mixture and resift the cocoa and flour mixture, shaking the sieve from side to side, to cover the top evenly.
- Gently fold in this powder using the same figure of eight action as before. The mixture will look dry and dusty at first, and a bit unpromising, but if you keep going very gently and patiently, it will end up looking gungy and fudgy. Stop just before you feel you should, as you don’t want to overdo this mixing.
- Finally, stir in the white and milk chocolate chunks until they’re dotted throughout.
- Pour the mixture into the prepared tin, scraping every bit out of the bowl with the spatula. Gently ease the mixture into the corners of the tin and paddle the spatula from side to side across the top to level it.
- Put in the oven and set your timer for 25 mins. When the buzzer goes, open the oven, pull the shelf out a bit and gently shake the tin. If the brownie wobbles in the middle, it’s not quite done, so slide it back in and bake for another 5 minutes until the top has a shiny, papery crust and the sides are just beginning to come away from the tin. Take out of the oven.
- As it cools, you can add your own brownie toppings!
- Leave the whole thing in the tin until completely cold, then, if you’re using the brownie tin, lift up the protruding rim slightly and slide the uncut brownie out on its base. If you’re using a normal tin, lift out the brownie with the foil. Cut into quarters, then cut each quarter into four squares and finally into triangles.
- They’ll keep in an airtight container for a good two weeks and in the freezer for up to a month.
Let me know if you give it a go!
Have a lovely day, I will update with more home learning tomorrow.
Best wishes
Miss Hall 🙂
What’s Up On Wednesday?
Good Afternoon Year 1s! (I miss saying this)
Just to let you know, Bug Club has been updated with phonics games and a new book for this week. Another new game will be arriving on Thursday. Keep an eye out for our comments!
Miss Hall’s Gardening
As promised, here are the plants I have been growing. Harry and I have been taking it in turns to water them and making sure they get lots of sunlight.
Basil
Cherry tomatoes
Aubergine
How are your green beans growing? Have you planted your seed yet? Have a go at using a ruler to measure how tall they are getting.
Miss Hall’s Rescue Mission!
This morning we had some tiny visitors in the garden… three baby voles! Our garden is not the best habitat for these voles so we needed to find them a new home. Harry wasn’t working at the hospital today so he helped me to take the voles to the woods near our home. They seemed much happier in their new home!
Have you helped anyone this week? What did you do? I would love to hear about it.
I hope you are all safe and enjoying yourselves.
Best wishes
Miss Hall 🙂
Have you had a good Easter?
Happy Easter everyone!
I hope you have all had a safe and fun Easter in the unusual circumstance we are in.
I have been busy setting up my bike on my turbo trainer so I can cycle in my house. You can create your own indoor bike too! If you have a bike, attach your stabilizers. Raise the stabilizers using shoes or books so the back wheel is lifted off of the ground (make sure it is balanced!). Now you can cycle away!
Let me know if you give this a go.
Also… my vegetables have started grow! I will post a photo tomorrow. How are your green bean plants doing?
What projects have you been doing this Easter break?
Keep an eye on the website as I will be sharing new home learning ideas. It’s been great to see so many of you accessing Bug Club books and activities. If you need any help with anything, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Thank you for all of the lovely photos and messages so far!
Best wishes,
Miss Hall 🙂
Lucas Jet Circus Skills
Hi all!
I hope you are having a lovely Easter break so far?
I have just had an update about the Lucas Jet Circus performance and workshop we had at Haytor View. Lucas is uploading videos of circus skills you can practice around your home. I have had a go, I think I might need a bit more practice!
Have a go at…
Toilet paper tricks
Juggling socks
Enjoy and let me know how you get on!
Best wishes and big smiles,
Miss Hall 🙂
Fun on Friday!
Today’s message I am writing from inside the school. It’s really strange being hear without seeing you all and hearing your laughter… I collected the rest of the garden peas so I can do some more gardening at home. Yesterday I planted some tomatoes, aubergine, basil and chives, but I had one pot let. Thankfully there are some garden pea seeds ready plant!
I hope you all have a wonderful Easter and continue to keep in touch through the website. You are all amazing and have done a tremendous job of a very unusual and tricky week. Remember, we are still here to listen and support.
Best wishes and big smiles,
Miss Hall 🙂
