Year 1

We are Learners!

To help us to remember our new story, “Knock, Knock, Open the Door” we have been using our slimy writing packs to have a go at writing the names of the different animals behind the doors. Some of us chose to the paint brushes to write the letters (remembering our alien hands!) whilst others got a bit slimy and used their fingers, yuck!

End of Term PE Fun

In PE over the past 2 weeks we have been exploring risk taking and confidence as we speedily approach the beginning of our next journey in Year 2. The children have been using teamwork, problem solving, balance and bravery to maneuver the different equipment. The confidence and courage each child displayed exploring new height mirrored how they have grown throughout the year and showed how they are ready for the next year.

Well done Year almost Year 2s!

Learning to manage the changes that life inevitably brings.

The children in Years 1 and 2 have been working together to think about ‘Changes’ and the feelings that change can bring.

We are all getting ready for our move up through the school and value being able to share and explore the feelings that changes like these bring. The R-Time skills that all of the children use to manage their  interactions with each other are truly impressive!

It is noticeable this year that the children have very, very few uncomfortable feelings about moving year groups and are actually more excited and looking forward to it, than worried about it.

We are going to continue to explore the feelings that change and continue to support that growing comfort and confidence in dealing with the changes that life inevitably brings.

Crazy Hair Day 2019!

Thank you to all the effort put in by both children and parents to make our Crazy Hair theme for non-school uniform great. We loved seeing all of the different styles and colours that made us all smile and gave the children lots to talk about. We promise we didn’t go too crazy!

You can do anything you set your mind to…

After our success with coming first in the Sustrans ‘Leg it to Lapland’ competition, we have had the pleasure and privilege of welcoming multiple Guinness World Recorder holder and bike stunt professional Andrei Burton to Haytor View this afternoon. Andrei is one of the most established and successful professional mountain bike athletes in the UK and showed us the steps that we need to take to do different bike stunts. Andrei proved to us that practice pays off and has inspired many of us to get on their our. We loved watching Andrei’s thrilling performance (even if we spent most of our time holding our breath!). Wow! A big thank you to Sustrans and Andrei Burton for providing us with a spectacular experience that will stay with us for a very long time.

Author in the Making.

Freya has taken a bold spot of our proud wall after sharing her amazing book in our Thursday assembly.

In Year 1 we have loved reading “The Book with No Pictures” where the reader has to say EVERYTHING that is written inside of the book, even if it is ridiculous… This inspired Freya to create her own book with no pictures to share. We loved how Freya used her writing and the expression of her voice to make her book really funny (especially when we found out Freya’s head was made of bananas)! Freya has shown a brilliant imagination, confidence and bravery in creating her own book and presenting it in front of both adults and children in our assembly. Well done Freya, we are very proud of you.

Magnificent Mathematicians in Year 1!

In Year 1, we have been developing are skills in multiplicaction by using concrete models to support us (Numicon, Big Base, bead strings and cubes) and have now moved on to exploring arrays.During our maths learning this afternoon a couple of the Year 2s popped in. This was a great opportunity for the Year 1 children to share what they know about multiplication and arrays. The class helped the Year 2 children to work out what the number sentence for the array was. Well done Year 1 not only did you help the Year 2s, you also showed an impressive understanding of multiplication.

The children then explored the classroom and outside. We noticed that their are lots of arrays all around us!

How to support your child with phonics.

Phonics has been a hot topic over the past couple of months with the upcoming Phonics Screening. This has come with some misconceptions!

You do not have to spend hours or days solidly doing phonics with your child. This is likely to be overwhelming for both you and them! Instead, please spread your phonics learning at home to do a little each day. Please use the phonics pack we have provided to go over the phonemes (letter sounds) and read a few of the alien and real words a day. Exposing your child to phonics in this way will help them to embed their knowledge and not become “drowned” in phonics. Please consider using pairs games with words, create your own alien name games with the phonemes and other activities that keep phonics fun. There are also lots of games and activities allocated on your BugClub.

Any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to speak to me. Thank you for all of your support!
