Throughout the school different year groups are getting involved in the Tunnels of Love project aim to transform the Penn Inn Subway.

Outline of the project:

The Penn Inn subway complex, Newton Abbot, is a neglected & unloved space. Many users find it unpleasant to walk through. Tunnels of Love links local people with artists to transform the subways into spaces where people want to be and interact with games, stories & imagery about who they are.

3 artists will engage with the local community to dramatically change an intimidating space. In idea-generating workshops, groups, schools, & local residents will imagine what the subways could become. People will discuss what makes them feel safe, what games they like to play, & they will share stories of themselves and the place where they live.

Entwining Photoshop imagery, ceramics & words together, artwork will provide unexpected encounters, featuring affirming messages that help boost mental health coupled with interactivity, a sense of being part of the community that created it, and seeing themselves reflected in their local environment. Tunnels of Love will enable an improvement in a sense of wellbeing rather than an unpleasant encounter at the start & end of each day.

In year 1 we had our initial visit from Kate Green who talked us through our part in the project. In the new year, Year 1 will be visiting the area to engage in photography and drawing projects.
