Friday 17th April 2020

Oh my goodness! Where is the beautiful sunshine gone? In asking that, we all know there is nothing like a cozy Friday spent with family indoors. Bethany has me already asked me if we can do some of the time capsule activities that I have uploaded below.

Please see below for some activities to support your child’s learning.

If you click on one of the four operations (+ – X ÷), it will bring you to a screen with lots of different activities. You can then choose for yourself the level of challenge you wish to have.

Mental Maths Train is a maths game which focuses on the essential vocabulary of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. It can help children to understand what type of calculation they have to do when faced with word problems.

It is a multiple choice game that is suitable for children from 5 to 11 years of age. Mental Maths Train is also good for consolidation of times tables knowledge.

For the best experience press the full-screen icon in the top right corner of the game. As with all of our games, Mental Maths Train is tablet friendly.

Friday 17th April Baking and Drawing

Good Morning..

I hope you enjoyed the sun yesterday and the physical challenges. Today I’m setting another physical challenge but this time a challenge for your arm muscles and finger muscles. Baking and Drawing …. I’ve added one recipe and photos I’ve had of families baking.  I wonder what your favourite recipe might be?

Reece’s biscuits    From Austin’s mum

Austin’s mum has sent in a range of recipes for me to share. I will add more next week. I undertook her challenge today following the recipe she had sent for  Gluten Free Carrot Cupcakes .  I did not have enough cake cases so, it turned into a carrot cake loaf instead.

My Carrot Cake loaf

This evening THURSDAY  at 8pm did you clap and make noises to say THANK YOU to the amazing NHS?  I know many of you have made rainbows and placed these onto your windows which will be brightening up so many peoples day.

So Today’s Challenge is a drawing / painting challenge…. Draw a picture of yourself Smiling or ALL of your family which you can put onto your window for others to see .. These smiles and your drawing being placed onto your windows will bring smiles to all of your friends as they go on their one walk a day.

Enjoy today’s finger and arm challenges. I would love to be sent any recipes which you regularly use and I also look forward to seeing any pictures you create today.,  you might want to draw something completely different and that is perfectly ok.

Enjoy your weekend and I will add another challenge to our page on Monday. Please do let me know if your are having any difficulties accessing or using Bug Club. I will be happy to find a way to help you.

Friday 17th April

Hello everyone!

I hope you are all well and filling your time with things that make you happy.

For everyone who values things like this, I’m putting up a plan for the next few weeks. it is clear to see that many of you are filling your time doing things together which you can all enjoy and learn from. This is great so please keep it up, keep looking at Bug Club and doing the activities and keep sharing your fantastic photos.

For those of you who value a bit more structure, the plan is here.

Home working timetable..docx

I will update the website with the resources, questions and ideas daily.

We will have one project focus each week, which will be the same for KS 1 and KS 2, so no matter which class you are in so you can learn alongside your brothers and sister and over the fence with anyone who is doing the same thing next door. As well as this, there will be a maths activities that you can talk about and do together. As always, Bugclub reading, spelling and grammar activities will be also available and updated regulalry.

Next week is all about the sorts of music you and those around you enjoy listening to. If you want, we can all be thinking about what music is, what we like and don’t like and why we like it and don’t like it. We may even try making some music of our own! Who knows, this may end up with families creating their own bands and appearing on Britain’s Got Talent!

The maths activity for this week is here if anyone wants it. There was a bit of a problem with the link yesterday, so hopefully this is fixed.

Stay happy, stay safe and we will see each other soon.

All the best

Thursday 16th April

Hi all!

I hope you have been able to enjoy the sunshine?

I have been spotting some arrays around around my home and I have created a little activity sheet for you if you click here –> Arrays home learning

Today has been a quieter day for me because Harry is back working at the hospital, so I am going to do some baking!  Have you done any cooking? What did you cook/make?

I have got some left over Easter chocolate that I am going to use to bake some brownies. Here is a tried and trusted brownie recipe that I have used from BBC goodfood:

  • 185g butter
  • 185g dark chocolate
  • 85g plain flour
  • 40g cocoa powder
  • 3 large eggs
  • 275g golden caster sugar
  1. Cut 185g unsalted butter into small cubes and tip into a bowl. Break 185g dark chocolate into small pieces and drop into the bowl.
  2. Fill a small saucepan about a quarter full with hot water, then put the bowl on top so it rests on the rim of the pan, not touching the water. Put over a low heat until the butter and chocolate have melted, stirring occasionally to mix them.
  3. Remove the bowl from the pan. Alternatively, cover the bowl loosely with cling film and put in the microwave for 2 minutes on High. Leave the melted mixture to cool to room temperature.
  4. While you wait for the chocolate to cool, position a shelf in the middle of your oven and turn the oven on to 180C/ 160C fan/ gas 4.
  5. Using a shallow 20cm square tin, cut out a square of non-stick baking parchment to line the base. Tip 85g plain flour and 40g cocoa powder into a sieve held over a medium bowl. Tap and shake the sieve so they run through together and you get rid of any lumps.
  6. Chop 50g milk chocolate into chunks on a board.
  7. Break 3 large eggs into a large bowl and tip in 275g golden caster sugar. With an electric on maximum speed, whisk the eggs and sugar. They will look thick and creamy, like a milk shake. This can take 3-8 minutes, depending on how powerful your mixer is. You’ll know it’s ready when the mixture becomes really pale and about double its original volume. Another check is to turn off the mixer, lift out the beaters and wiggle them from side to side. If the mixture that runs off the beaters leaves a trail on the surface of the mixture in the bowl for a second or two, you’re there.
  8. Pour the cooled chocolate mixture over the eggy mousse, then gently fold together with a spatula. Plunge the spatula in at one side, take it underneath and bring it up the opposite side and in again at the middle. Continue going under and over in a figure of eight, moving the bowl round after each folding so you can get at it from all sides, until the two mixtures are one and the colour is a mottled dark brown. The idea is to marry them without knocking out the air, so be as gentle and slow as you like.
  9. Hold the sieve over the bowl of eggy chocolate mixture and resift the cocoa and flour mixture, shaking the sieve from side to side, to cover the top evenly.
  10. Gently fold in this powder using the same figure of eight action as before. The mixture will look dry and dusty at first, and a bit unpromising, but if you keep going very gently and patiently, it will end up looking gungy and fudgy. Stop just before you feel you should, as you don’t want to overdo this mixing.
  11. Finally, stir in the white and milk chocolate chunks until they’re dotted throughout.
  12. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin, scraping every bit out of the bowl with the spatula. Gently ease the mixture into the corners of the tin and paddle the spatula from side to side across the top to level it.
  13. Put in the oven and set your timer for 25 mins. When the buzzer goes, open the oven, pull the shelf out a bit and gently shake the tin. If the brownie wobbles in the middle, it’s not quite done, so slide it back in and bake for another 5 minutes until the top has a shiny, papery crust and the sides are just beginning to come away from the tin. Take out of the oven.
  14. As it cools, you can add your own brownie toppings!
  15. Leave the whole thing in the tin until completely cold, then, if you’re using the brownie tin, lift up the protruding rim slightly and slide the uncut brownie out on its base. If you’re using a normal tin, lift out the brownie with the foil. Cut into quarters, then cut each quarter into four squares and finally into triangles.
  16. They’ll keep in an airtight container for a good two weeks and in the freezer for up to a month.

Let me know if you give it a go!

Have a lovely day, I will update with more home learning tomorrow.

Best wishes

Miss Hall 🙂

Den making and den fun!

Fun Outside!

Thursday 16th April 2020

Hello everyone!

Yesterday I began to make phone calls to all the children in Base 2 and it was so lovely hear your voices and chat with  your mums and dads. I am in school on Friday and will continue to phone everyone in Base 2 for a lovely catch up chat!

I have had some amazing photos sent of the fun things you have been doing at home and you can view some of these on the Foundation Stage Blog. Thomas is enjoying a daily walk and has had the idea of collecting items to bring back home and then he has used his maths skills to sort and count the items! You too could do this! The next time you go out for a walk take a small bag to find and collect different items like:

Fat sticks and thin sticks short and long sticks,  feathers , something red yellow green

different shaped leaves  and so on.

Bring them home and sort , count or arrange them to make a picture? Can you make a snail or a butterfly?? Or set a trail for a family member to follow leading to a surprise or maybe your own home made den!More activities can be found: https://www.getoutwiththekids.co.uk/activities/doing/activities-walking-woods-kids/ and the woodland trust web site!

I also learnt that some of you have been writing letters to each other! May be you could draw a picture for a neighbour or friend as a surprise! You may get a surprise back!

As ever stay safe and enjoy having fun with your families

Mrs Penn

16/04/20

Morning all!

I hope you enjoyed looking around the Smithsonian in America. I have another great activity for you today.

The platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) is a strange, unusual creature. What can you find out about it? Why is it unusual? Which other species is it related to? Does it have any similarity to other species? Find out what you can about its habitat, diet, how it feeds its young, its appearance and so on. Pretty strange, eh?

Collect what you find out into your lined booklet and draw it accurately. Imagine you are Charles Darwin seeing this strange creature for the first time. Use the internet to help your research. Here’s a link to the Natural History Museum website to start you off:

https://www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/the-platypus-puzzle.html

Good luck – enjoy it!

Mr Hankin
