“How can a literacy game be fun?”

As part of our literacy learning today, we played a game that was not only really fun, but also helped us to practice writing different expanded noun phrases.
Initially, the children were skeptical about this game. I had questions like, “How can a literacy game be fun?”
Well, as it turns out, they can be very fun, very challenging and very competitive.
When I called time on the game, everybody wanted to carry on as they were HAVING FUN!
We are all really looking forward to all the other games that we will be playing in literacy (and other subjects) throughout the year.

Dragon’s Den

During the past few literacy lessons, we have been learning about an invention called The Bully Proof Vest. Today, children who had learned about different parts of the invention were put into groups and had to use their combined knowledge of the invention to pitch it to four relentless dragons. They certainly asked some tough questions.
As children prepared and then presented their sales pitch, we all learned a lot about working as a team wherein each member brings something unique to the table. Every group did their best to successfully sell the invention to the four dragons.
In the process, we learned a lot about ourselves and others; experienced some incredibly clever presentations; and had a laugh in the process!
Well done Year 5!

Space: The Final Frontier

Today, Year 5 got to explore the vast expanse of the universe within a 10ft dome… Crazy right?
We all enjoyed the experience and learned so much from it. Come and visit our classroom to have a read of our ‘Space Odyssey’ book on our classroom door. It tells you what we learned, what we enjoyed and what we want to find out more about. Check out below for a preview of what some of the children enjoyed:
Nicola really enjoyed learning about the other planets. She found out you couldn’t stand on some of them because they are made of gas.
Sophie learned that black holes can suck up stars.
Skye enjoyed laying down, looking up at the stars and the constellations that they made like Leo and Hercules.
Kai enjoyed the Star Wars part – as did I.
Corey enjoyed the black hole because it looked brutal.
Jamie D and Chloe enjoyed the bit where the stars moved and he felt really dizzy afterwards.
Ebonie enjoyed learning that you turn into spaghetti if you are sucked into a black hole.
Charlie enjoyed learning about black holes after finding out about them in Star Wars. He also enjoyed learning about his favourite planet and finding out that the rings are made of rocks and ice.
Liam enjoyed seeing the different shapes the stars made and wants to learn more about solar eclipses.
Ayesha learned that stars are not pointy and that they are actually spheres and made of fire.
Leo did some maths and worked out 60 quintillion Earths would fit into the biggest known star (VY Canis Majoris)
Rio finally learned that there are stars even bigger than the sun.
Katie really enjoyed finding out about black holes and learning that whatever goes in, never comes back out.
Newton Abbot Lantern Parade
Wow! What a great evening we had at the Newton Abbot Lantern Parade!
We had so much fun displaying our awesome lanterns – the bright yellow chicks really stood out from the crowd.
We really enjoyed making them!
Thank you to everyone (children, friends, family, staff) who turned up for what was a night of fun.

TO BE UPLOADED
Home Learning – Due 7th June
Over half term, as well as your reading, please complete the planet research task.
Pick one planet from our Solar System to research and create a short non-chronological report about it.
Your research might include the following:
- What materials is the planet made of?
- What is the size of the planet? (Try to find your answer in kilometres)
- How far away from the Sun is the planet?
- How long does it take for the planet to orbit the Sun? (How long is a year on the planet?)
- How long does it take for the planet to rotate once? (How long is a day on the planet?)
- What is the temperature of the planet in °C? (Think about day and night temperatures)
- Does the planet have any moons? (If so, do they have names?)
- Who discovered the planet?
I’m sure you can come up with a lot more great ideas!
Make sure your report has a heading (it might just be the name of the planet), as well as a detailed drawing of the planet.
If you want, you can also create it digitally and then print it off at home.
Don’t forget to have a great half-term and don’t forget your swimming stuff when we get back!
P.S.
Home learning club children, I want you to research the last two questions about your planets. Bring in your findings and we can type them up in school.

Use the description from ‘Who Let the Gods Out’ to draw Charon.
Do not present this piece of home-learning to me without colour. The description includes different colours.
After drawing the picture, come up with your own description of Charon. Perhaps try to find some synonyms to rewrite the original?
