Just to let everyone know that Stay and Play is back on and it is bigger and better than ever!

Please try and pop along and give it a go. It would be great to see you!Following the success of the previous years, we have seen huge numbers of parents and children staying and playing together afterschool on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We are now getting some foundation stage parents popping along as well as some parents with children who have moved on into year 3. It is great to see everyone!

If you haven’t been along, please pop in and give it a go. it is a great environment to relax and just enjoy time with your child. It also gives you and opportunity to have those little chats with the adults that might not happen otherwise.

We hope we see you there.

Vocabulary is a huge focus, not just in year 2, but across the school. I was very honoured to be invited again to present at the recent vocabulary conference with Jean Gross. The work we are doing at Haytor view and our commitment and approach to this crucial area is always well received by other practitioners and is apparently inspirational in its presentation! I don’t know about that but what we do know is that words, talk and vocabulary are absolutely crucial and that our children and parents are working hard on building word consciousness to support each other in developing, growing and securing their own vocabulary.

These are some of the words the children have discovered themselves through their home reading. We have shared, discussed and explored all of these words together in class and now children should feel more able to use these and the other words as their own. Hopefully, this will encourage an exponential growth in vocabulary as we all become empowered and enabled to grow our own vocabulary independently by capturing new words we read, see or hear each day.

Write a My News piece about your weekend. Start with an exclamation sentence like ‘What a great weekend I had!” to engage your audience and then give lots of who, where, when, what details. Add adjectives to give your reader a clearer idea of what you did and so make it more interesting.

Read your bug club book.

On your book choosing day, choose a book together from our book crates and start to fill in your reading record for the week.

Some Ideas for Home learning over the holiday.

 Use your time in Time to Think to plan what you would like to do together for half term home learning.

•  Learn to play a new game. –  Can you teach others how to play it Stay and Play?
• Do something messy together.
• Clear your bug club books.
• Can you name all of the coins and notes we use?
• Find out how many trees you can name.- How can you tell they are different?
• Discover some new words from a book or TV show.
• Create a story to act, write or draw.
• Find out many ways can you make 10?      I can think of at least 20 ways- can you find more than me?

Challenge- create your own shades of meaning box for verbs for  ‘to walk’ going from fastest to slowest.

Play a game of 10 or 1 less ( -10 or -1).

Start at one hundred and the first to zero is the winner.

Challenge-If you really want to challenge yourself, start at 120!
