On the sunniest of sunny days, the children of Base 1 enjoyed a hard earned trip to Dartmoor Zoo. The trip was entirely funded by the proceeds from the ‘Spring into Action’ challenge – well done and thank you once again for making this trip possible free of charge. As we boarded the coach, children chatted about what they might see on their trip. There were whispers of lions, tigers and remarks such as, “I think, I might have been there before.” The Dartmoor Zoo story has captured the imagination of many – even movie buffs in Hollywood!
We enjoyed an educational talk about animals’ habitats and we met a snake, two tortoises and a male and female stick insect. As part of our educational talk, we learned about the very important conservation work the people of Dartmoor Zoo do to help endangered and critically endangered animals. Without this hard work and effort, many of our most loved animals might become extinct. Dartmoor Zoo are part of a worldwide effort to help these magnificent creatures come back from the brink of extinction.
He truly was a ‘sticky’ stick insect!
After the educational talk, the children roamed the zoo checking out the wolves, big cats, meerkats and goats to name just a few.

All in all, it was an amazing day. We learned a lot, walked a lot and laughed a lot. Thank you to everyone who helped to make this trip a huge success. The coach arrived back at base with one or two weary and tired heads (…and feet!). However, just as they had left in the morning, children were still chatting, this time not of what they might see but of what they had seen.
From what we have heard the children remark, it is well worth the trip….
