Understanding Sound

As part of their science lessons year 4 have been learning all about sound, they have explored quiet and loud sounds, pitch and frequency and then they made string telephones to see how sound can travel.

The children then spent another lesson making panpipes to see if they could create a quiet sounding instrument. The class may agree the sound wasn’t as quiet once all the instruments were made!

Erupting Volcanoes

Year 4 have been learning about volcanoes in their geography lessons, as part of their lesson they spent a happy time simulating what an eruption could look like.

Autumn 2022 – Voting, Geography trip and making poo!

Year 4 spent time learning about democracy so they could vote for school councilors to represent their class. The children wrote speeches and created campaign posters, speeches were delivered and the children then voted in polling stations. Congratulations to Dillon and Gracie, our year 4 councilors.

For Geography the children explored their local area and navigated using their knowledge of maps, compasses and Newton Abbot. The children were lucky enough to be guided by Mrs. Russell who grew up in the area and could share some local stories for the class.

In science year 4 have been learning about the digestive system and healthy eating in design technology. The children deepened their learning by replicating the process of making poo. There was much laughter, and a few groans, as they explored how to create poo.

Christmas Craft Afternoon

‘Parents enjoy and share in their children’s lives.’

‘Children will collaborate with others in all context.’

We had great fun at our Christmas Craft afternoon. Our families joined us in our festive celebrations and we set ourselves a challenge making a paper chain that was long enough to be put up across both year 3 and 4 class.  Of course we achieved it!

World Mental Health Day 2022

On Monday 10th October, years 3 and 4 learned about World Mental Health Day. The classes looked at the Normal Magic website to watch a video which explained what good mental health is and how the children can look after themselves.

The children then split into small groups to write 10 activites they would do which would allow them time to look after their mental wellbeing by ‘taking 10’.

The children then sat in groups to take 10 by sharing their books with one another.

If you would like any more information about the Take 10 approach or to visit the Normal Magic Webiste follow this link https://www.normalmagic.co.uk/resources/10-a-day-2/

Shared Reading with our Families

On Tuesday afternoons at 2:45 the children of years 3 and 4 share their reading books with their families. As the children’s grown ups arrive they can hear their child read and often the child’s thoughts about their book. Afterwards the grown ups have 10 mintues with their child’s class teacher to ask any questions about the reading books set, how to support their child’s reading and any other questions which spring to mind.

The children love to share their books with their grown ups and the excitiment beforehand is amazing.

Please feel welcome to come and spend time with your child and their reading book on Tuesdays at 2:45.

Here are some photographs from Tuesday 27th September.

Roald Dahl Day 2022

On 13th September years 3 and 4 celebrated the life and work of Roald Dahl. The children looked at authors who write their books in carefully designed garden sheds. The classes spent time designing their ideal creative shed spaces to inspire their writing. The children watched videos of Roald Dahl and Cressida Cowell talking about their creative writing sheds. The links for these videos are available at the bottom of this post.

Here are some of the amazing creative writing sheds the children designed.

Art Workshop provided by The Helen Foundation

On Thursday, the year 4 children worked alongside Monica-Shanta from Daisi.  They were exploring ‘Drawing Conversations – Expressing Emotions through Art’.  The children learnt how drawings can communicate emotions.  Monica took the children through different approaches to drawing in a series of exercises which explored how we use our bodies to draw and how mark-making expresses and communicates emotion.  After individual activities, the children worked in pairs and in groups to create collaborative ‘Drawing Conversations’ – an exercise which became a powerfully focused and bonding experience of visual talking and listening.  The children had a great day and really enjoyed themselves – especially using the charcoal!

Thank you to the Helen Foundation who funded the project which enabled out children to take part. The Helen Foundation is a an artist based charity which supports and motivates young people in all branches of the arts in Teignbridge and South Devon. The Foundation provide school awards, workshops, bursaries and support young people to develop their talents and pursue their ambitions.

All of our year 4 children took part in the ‘Year 4 Mini Olympic Day’ at Newton Abbot College.  The children were teamed up with children from other primary schools and participated in a range of activities.  The event was led by Mr Patchett and supported by the PE teachers and students from the college.  There were even a few familiar faces who use to attend our school,  helping out. We all had a great time!
